What is Libertas? in Libertas | World Anvil

What is Libertas?

Libertas is divided. Eight hundred years ago, a great ark ship descended from the sky of an icy world, and settled upon something quite unalike promised paradise. Their ancestors had left home with a dream for a world to begin upon anew. But what had been squandered was never found, and The Tokyo didn't find New Eden. It found something resembling Helheim.   But that dream did not falter. Libertas was founded and for centuries has - if not prospered - survived. Spreading across a hostile solar system and creating a set of cultures that often clash, and rarely agree. Libertan space is dominated by inequality, corporate greed, and human stories of survival admidst it all.   Woven in are enigmatic figures and ancient history that clings to the last vestige of humanity. Baggage that has never been lost, just beaten a little by the passage of time. Libertas is humanity on its last legs, yet surviving - as we oft do.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Where It Began

Libertas was inspired by my journey to find science fiction that wasn't dark. Literally, it was too dark for me.   Libertas pops with colour, pastels and pinks! It's retrowave, miami flamingo science fiction. The artwork of Yoko Honda is exactly the colour palette that excited me.   The famous poem inscribed on Lady Liberty herself, The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus, should be credited for naming Libertas.   The journey of these weary travelers to a new shore encapsulates the world of Libertas. It's about struggle, victory and loss alike.   We're making something colourful here! Watch this space.
