Michelangelo's David

Michelangelo's David is perhaps the most famous piece of ancient Earth art ever created. During the evacuation of Earth, a number of major artworks were spread between ark ships. The Tokyo ark ship was chosen as the destination for David, alongside artifacts such as the Elgin Marbles and Truth Coming Out of Her Well.   Created around 1500 by the artist Michelangelo, it portrays a religious figure from the extinct Christian faith. Considered a masterpiece of marble work, it was originally commissioned for the Earth city of Florence.   Upon settlement of Libertas, the statue was placed in headquarters of the The Symposium. It is presently located in the foyer of the Symposium chambers, behind glass to protect it from the elements and degradation. The marble of the sculpture has been damaged by time, and extensive restoration was undertaken in E2.Y222.   David has become a symbol of democracy and freedom in Libertan space, and it is often referenced in literature arguing against the Symposium. Ironically, reproductions are found in every Symposium station in the Core System, as a symbol of the Symposium's authority. Counter-culture has interpreted this largely as a symbol of how the Symposium has failed its goals.   During the Solar War an anti-war protestor attempted to destroy the sculpture. Two Symposium clerks were killed in the attack but the homemade bomb failed to penetrate the protective glass.   Many reinterpretations of the sculpture have been made, entering it to something of a cult icon in pop culture. Luna Cat's third album is titled David after the sculpture.
