Molten Elemental

"Ye go far enough from shore and you'll spot 'em. Black boils--the only real saving grace to any ship upon the seas. Though on the darkest nights or in a forsaken storm, many wander too close. Then you watch for the red fires to warn ya: these are not your waters." - Olim Hejiick   When the titans crushed the old world under their feet, fissures cracked beneath the waves and life emerged. Roiling masses of amber magma spread their reach upon the ocean floor. Tendrils of ash wisped through the water as the lava cooled and flaked, now awoken and stirring toward the surface. Piece by piece, as the magma bellowed up, the elementals grew and clawed until the black boils broke the seas. These are the origins told by the mythologists of The Librari.   But if you find the right drunken deckhand in a tavern in Port Janus, they may have bravery enough to whisper of the monstrosities heralded by those boils: "The heat catches your attention first--the sweat on your brow even on a chilly night. Then, right there, in the midst of miles of endless water--fire. The hull roars amber and red, you'd think the sunrise was hitting the horizon. And it's alive. I've watched it; like a worm inching through the dirt, the fire thick as the sludge my grandma calls as a soup--it crawls up the ship. You try to put it out but it only blackens for a moment. The helmsman will pull hard on the wheel; men will run to the sails; but the fire doesn't let go. You can see the black beneath the waves, like a obsidian iceberg gripping us. Sometimes a lifeboat can escape its attention, as the fire craves a bigger fly in its web. But other times--sailors leap into the waves to escape the slow death but the heat--. It's like tossing a lobster into a boiling pot. We rowed away to the crackle of timber and the screams of those boiling alive in the middle of the ocean. Them bookkeepers talk of dragons and titans of the past but trust me--we got our own monsters into our own times."   New vessels reside in the dockyards of Port Janus, designs promising a defense against these molten behemoths. But few find crew to test the theory.
