Snowy Featherbird

The snowy featherbird is a species of bird found in the Virforte Highlands. It is known for its use of Power of Light to create warmth during the cold winter months.

Differentiation

The snowy featherbird is a subspecies of the Featherbird found in southwestern Cosonia. In the 600s, the primary predator of the featherbird, Lonacat, was haunted to near extinction. The featherbird population exploded, creating increased competition for resources. Some were forced from their usual habitat up into the mountains. Featherbird species are known for their ability to manipulate visible light, but some had the ability to manipulate light below the visible spectrum. Such abilities were not well documented at the time, but current research indicates this is a very rare trait. Featherbirds with the ability to generate heat through wavelength manipulation were able to survive the harsh Virforte winter and breed the following spring. They soon became a part of the mountain ecosystem as both prey and symbiote.

The Virforte Heater

By converting light waves using Power of Light to generate heat, the snowy featherbird creates a pocket of warmth around itself as insulation from the cold mountain air. During particularly cold stretches, snow featherbirds will huddle together to create especially large and warm pockets that attract other birds and small animals. This is usually done where they can find a descent source of light, whether at heights with unobstructed view of the sun or near man-made light sources at night. While rare, snowy featherbirds have also shown that the ability to manipulate the edge of the red spectrum still exists within the population, though it does them little good in hiding from predators in a white environment.
