Tear

The easy atmosphere that had been in the room before Antheos had appeared was gone without a trace, replaced by utter speechlessness. Zairah still sat on the bench motionlessly, staring at nothing in particular. She slowly slumped down, as if only now realizing what had happened. In the meantime, an older woman cleaned the lascerations on her right hand, applied some sort of herbal ointment to the wounds and wrapped them in strips of fabric.

Even after most of the people present had gone to sleep, she still sat there and stared at the darkness. Eventually, Sabian sat down next to her without saying anything.

"How do you feel?" he finally asked carefully.

"No idea." Zairah replied.

"He got what he deserved." Sabian said, "But I keep wondering if things would have been different if we hadn't run away like cowards back in Lathear. Maybe we should have stayed with you to keep him off you. I wish I could change that."

"Would've, could've, should've. The things that happened, happened." Zairah said.

"We saw that. And even if they didn't before, now everybody here knows not to mess with the Black Dragon. I thought you were intimidating the first time I met you, and that was far less intimidating than whatever this was today." Sabian said. Zairah laughed humourlessly.

"The good old times when I thought life had showed me it's worst when my sister died in my arms. I know better now. I guess I should thank the motherfuckers for that." she replied.

"Don't be too greatful, they still are the swines who stole our homes. I'd rather have you give them what they deserve." Sabian said.

"That's why I'm with Jon and Lona. They have quite the bone to pick with Iohan." Zairah said.

"They do?" Sabian asked in surprise.

"Yes, they do. Iohan murdered their father. Not his henchmen, Iohan himself. He's their uncle and wanted to murder their entire family. He was kicked out of the family for it and now he wreaks havoc wherever he goes. And all of it just to enable himself to take revenge eventually." Zairah explained.

"Good." Sabian said, then he offered her some bread, "You haven't eaten all evening, hungry?"

"Not really." Zairah admitted, but she accepted the bread. She took a bite and chewed it listlessly. She ate the whole piece, but on the last bite, she froze. All of a sudden, she felt sick. Without a word she got up and ran outside. She stumbled, caught herself on a tree and threw up. On her way back to the house, she collapsed and broke out in tears, real tears like she hadn't cried since Arthea's death.

Sabian watched her from the door, unsure what to do. Eventually, he stepped outside, sat down next to her and put his arms around her. She held on to him tightly.

"He was my best friend once." Zairah managed. For a while, they just sat there, and when she had calmed down again, he helped her up and they went back into the house.
