Pergenni the Stringer

The Stringer Pergenni

Pergenni is a well-known Europhian musician who resides in the Ruined Rockies to the west of Latani. Because Europhians have such malleable genetics, their forms differ from individual to individual, smaller Europhians with a normal number of limbs are much smarter and live longer lives, whereas those born bigger or with a greater number of limbs have much more stunted brainpower and lifespans, mainly being used as soldiers or workers. Pergenni was born a skinny thing with 8 arms and 4 legs, he was reserved and quiet in his childhood and had been pushed by his harsh parents to become a disposable warrior because he won't live as long as others anyway. His mind always seemed to be in a state of limbo, almost never speaking, and he acted in about the same was as one with light autism would. Throughout his childhood however, Pergenni discovered a deep connection with music and the multi-stringed instruments of his people. Every day he would visit a gold-masked elder of his village named Berregga to listen and slowly learn how to play various instruments, investing most of his time and attention to them until they were mastered. Pergenni was always told about his useful but limited nature and was taught about the harshness and cruelties of the world, especially since he was born in a time of war. Pergenni took this to heart, but not in the way most expected, one day leaving his home with just a few tools and small instruments on his person.   Pergenni uses a "V" shaped instrument of his own model that he named "The Goddessvoice", which took him a full year to fully build after two previous failures. What he made resembled a large guitar with 12 strings on each of the long arms of the instrument. He uses all 8 of his arms simultaneously to create complex and beautiful serenades of his own composition. He strove for greatness and purpose, although for the longest time, he never found it. Pergenni would travel place to place playing on The Goddessvoice to passersby for scraps of money, with his reputation growing with each town he visited. Pergenni deeply understands his own mortality and short life, which is why he pursues his dream by trying to bring peace to whoever he can with his music.   Pergenni eventually found a home in the mountain city of Krada, one of the oldest standing cities in Latani. Usually at this time, an annual, week-long festival known as The Festival of Unity would be held in Krada, which was a celebration that brought together all species and cultures to Krada for a time of fun, connections and most importantly, peace. However, since the cruel rule of Ledoux and the following War of Flesh and Scales, the festival had not been held in decades due to the broken and hopeless state of the world. That is until Pergenni arrived and started playing his music throughout the silent, ancient city. The people of the town always tried to silence and shoo away the inappropriate Europhian, but his stubborn music eventually reinvigorated the people and word spread to neighboring areas about the music of Pergenni, and rumors that the festival may be finally starting once again. People from the surrounding areas came for the week of the festival, it was a small event, but an event nonetheless with Pergenni as the main source of entertainment. After the festival was over word spread further and come time next year for the event, the biggest Festival of Unity recorded in recent memory occurred in that mountain city. Pergenni permanently settled in Krada, content with his work. Pergenni sometimes ventures off to perform in other towns, or just deep into forests to get away from the crowd once and awhile.

Nice article :D I'm sad for those Drakovich found useless because they have too many limbs :( It's good that Pergenni decided that his short lifespan meant he should do whatever he wants with his life!   I'm still left wondering a bit about Drakovich after this article. Are they some kind of reptile species?

A bit like demonic salamanders with tough skin, and my world is still in its early stages, thank you for your comment!

Curious species and an interesting article. Really wondering what determines the amount of limbs, is it truly random? Nice that he managed to use his short life to bring some joy!

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

Yeah it is pretty random, though parent limbs can play a small part in altering them, Thanks for the comment!

It almost seems that the Drakovich live in an area that magically or scientifically makes them prone to mutations. Have any beneficial mutations come out of this, or is it less genetic and more random chance?   At least he got to mostly enjoy his short life doing something he enjoyed. Looking forward to reading more of your world in challenges and events to come.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Thank you so much! In terms of the area they live in I didn't think much of it, mostly it being a genetic quirk all the Drakovich have. In terms of benefits, those born "normal" are far smarter than those of other species, and on the opposite end, the multi-armed warriors are very formidable on the battlefield.
