The Drowned Land

"When the world starts sinking again, we will be the first lost."
  • Kayde Impunity-Lost

  • Those that leave the Renyan Unitary can either travel north into the slaver nation of the Bast Oligarchy or south into a deadly swamp. The swamp is home to the allied barge owners called "The Lost", the locals either dredge the swamp for peat to use as fuel or use the natural dangers of the swamp to act as a raiding base, making them immune to pursuit.

The swamp has deep channels, wide enough for barges to run down, while the solid land is filled with deadly plants and venomous creatures. Fog rises naturally from the still water and hangs at most points, making navigation difficult.

Travellers to the swamp would do well to heed the garb of locals, with thick boots and gas masks. They also each have a decorated pole that they use to show social status and check the area for dangers. There are two main seasons a traveller may see; the growth season when the water is lower and plants have a chance to grow or the sunken season where water covers most of the land.

    Veoc

Known as "the Rainy Valley" it was a southern settlement of Al Renya that was flooded when the dams burst. It now slowly collapses deep in the swamp. It has the traditional style of wooden houses that have now since rotted and collapsed. The rare stone building or flat area shows where it once stood. Some died in the flood, mainly trapped in houses, leaving bones to litter the area.

    Black Raven Tribe

Croxis is leader of a small trading hub on the outskirts of The Drowned Land. She acts as a humble trader but is secretly a Biographer. She murders Renyans and experiments with if she can raise them with little personality to use as an army.
    Pop: 300
This is one of the permanent trading villages that sits on the edge of The Drowned Land. It allows a place that Renyans can easily go to trade goods with The Lost. It has large reserves of peat but is slowly becoming known for how many Renyans go missing around it. The leader of the village has been using imperfect Histoire for defenses, raising a number of barely functioning people to fight.

    Geography

the area is about 430x400 km in size with the northern part changing from swamp land to the border of the Renyan Unitary, the other three sides bleed into the sea. It takes a skilled navigator about a week to travel from the north side to the south by boat. The stone is area looks as if it has taken on the essence of the swamp; it ranges in colour from greys to greens.

    Fauna & Flora

Geese and ducks are occasional sights but have largely been taken over by a vicious species of bird. It is a brightly coloured bird who flies down and strike a person or animal on the head with their beak. The beak has toxins of its own that cause such wounds to not stop bleeding, leaving the victim to pass out and be feasted upon.

Small cats like servals and a variety of lizards hunt around the area, most of the reptiles that enjoy the thermal vents that seep through the water carry venom or poison. There are also wild boar and cows that forage around the small islands and are taken care of by the locals. Koi and carp are another food source found under the water but predatory fish and leeches add to the danger.

Lettuce and Watercress are another food source and keep many of the animals alive. A variety of mushrooms and healing herbs can be found but most common herbs that can be found are dangerous such as the Bahne, a plant that can paralyze anything that touches their sharp thorns. The juice from these plants are harvested by those on the Cutter raiding barges and used in their raids.

    Natural Resources

Peat is abundant at the bottom of the swamp and barges travel along with implements that drag into the water to collect it. These are then traded with the Giver crafts to be passed on to any traders that get close enough to the edge of the swamp to catch the attention of a boat.
