Personal history

Michael led a fairly average life through most of his developement. Born in the Green Kingdom, he was never particularly religious or eager to be anything more then what he was: the son of a mage, an apprentice scribe. He was never giften in the art of magic, but the access to knowledge and books led him to becoming quite knowledgeable and curious.
When he was eightteen, Michael met an archiologist named Nisha, who sought to learn the history of their world by exploring the forbidden dragon cities and the lost Red Kingdom despite the dangers. Michael fell madly in love almost at first sight and followed when Nisha and her band moved on from his home town. He spent the better part of a decade learning more about her, her interests, and everything about her just seemed to make him happy. He lost all his anxiety when she was near, and he was not ashamed to admit she knew more about the world then him. They married when he was twenty-nine and she was thirty-one, in a small ceremony that mostly consisted of their band of friends and co-workers.
They travelled all across the land, recording many things within Nisha's many books, which Michael helped pen. However, their adventure was cut abruptly short as Nisha was killed by bandits on the road. Though they managed to drive the attackers away, Michael had lost his light and all he could think was how to get her back. The Black Kingdom, the land of the dead, was his best option, and so he brought Nisha's body to the Death Nexus and begged for the dragon goddess to restore her.
The dragon did not refuse, exactly, but had put a heavy price upon the request, a task to be done before it can come true.
For millenia, Michael has travelled and searched for a way to fulfill this contract, and the time has made him lose empathy to other mortals. This has led him to doing many things he is not proud of, and he has become known as the Immortal Traveller; myth to those who have seen him rise from his various graves and terror to those who happen to be in the way of his goals. Many a bandit band and caravan troupe have been left scattered across the roads and rocks.

Mental Trauma

Michael is immortal, a blessing to many seen as a curse to him due to its various drawbacks. Not only must he watch those around him, those he is close to, die of sickness or age, but he is also not invulnerable. Although he cannot be killed, his body can be mutilated and he is forced to remain conscious of it, and only if the injuries are to great will he be divinely pulled back together. If it is some standard injury that could result in death, such as being impaled, he must remove himself from the offending object before the injury will close. More creative factors, like beheading, may need outside assistance; another person must move his head back to the rest of his body before the injury heals and he becomes able to speak once more, reattached to his lungs for the needed breath.

Motivation

Michael, above all else, wishes to fullfill his contract with the Black Dragon Empress, despite knowing that it was weighted heavily against him to the point of being more a curse then a bargain. It is unfortunate that his long life, with no end in sight, has led him to somewhat lose his sense of empathy for others.
