Divinebone Quill

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Crafted of divine bone, this quill can write upon any parchment and forge a magical contract. It pulls on the divine and fiendish energy of the deity it is made from when held, visibile by a vibrant plume feather that extends from the back, and uses this energy as a type of ink. It will do the same from a mortal, though it will draw blood to form the link nessisary to bind the two parties together. Because of this draw of energy, it is near impossible to fool a divinebone quill or sign another being into the contract.   Clerics, warlocks, and even some other adventuring classes are all capable of forging agreements, though the former cases are segnificantly more common. Both parties must agree to the terms of the contract in order to seal it, and while the god must follow it sometimes to the letter, it is possible for the mortal to bend the agreement to their own purposes if they are clever when forging the contract. This has led many a god to their doom, but also many mortals as well, for a contract can only bend so far before it breaks and unleash the wrath of a scorned deity upon the one who broke it.

Manufacturing process

Each divine or archdevil only possesses a single quill made from their own bones, hence the name. Some theorize that these pens materialize when the god comes into being, while others believe they must carve out a bone from their own bodies to shape into the quill. Gods are unwilling to speak of the process in any amount of detail, but as they seem unable to recreate the quill if it is damaged or lost then it could be that they themselves do not know the origins.

Significance

The writing tool used to forge magical binding contracts with deities, these pens were used from the beginning of time. The nature of these contracts demanded that the god or devil fullfill their end of the bargain to the best of their ability, unless the mortal violated the terms themselves. Due to how this contract can enforce even the most powerful of beings to become a servant if they are not cautious, a deity and devil must always be very cautious to forge agreements using their divinebone quill.
