The Wastelands of Ostelan

The vast, steel landscape between the three cities of Ostelan, is filled with various creatures and fiends that cause terror in travellers who dare to venture away from the main roads.

Geography

A mostly flat area of Ostelan, spanning for hundreds of miles across the whole continent. There are no rivers, no trees, no plants except for brave strands of grass poking up between slats of steel, iron, and stone. The north-east corner of the wasteland is bordered by mountains, at the base of which lies Voxtein.

Fauna & Flora

The only fauna living in the Wastelands are fiends. When Asmodeus overthrew Melora after the Uprising, he brought his devils with him to populate the areas between cities, and keep the Ostelians in order. All kinds of devils roam freely through the Wasteland, with a clear hierarchy, which ilmon are by far at the top of. They are the most powerful fiends currently residing in the wastelands, and command all the other devils, taking instructions only from Asmodeus himself and the Servants of Asmodeus, if they brave the Wastelands.
Each other tier of devils commands the tier below it. Bone Devils are highly respected by most devils, while bearded devils are near the bottom of the hierarchy. Lemures and imps are the cannonfodder of the devils. Many other devils also exist in the Wasteland.

History

The Wastelands were created during the Smothering, the time period in which Ostelians covered all natural land with manmade/refined materials to eradicate all traces of Melora's reign. The Smothering took almost two centuries. You can see how the Smothering fits into the history of Ostelan here.

Tourism

Occasionally, brave-hearted merchants looking for rare animal bits come to the wastelands to battle the fiends that live here. They rarely come back alive, and never survive if they come across an ilmon. The only other people who visit the wastelands rather than simply travelling few are the rare scholars of Ostelan, who want to learn more about the creatures that Asmodeus has placed upon the land.
