Mon Coimhead- Mount of the Watch

I once walked the pilgrim's road to the summit of Mon Coimhead. It was a long road, aye, from Gwyddard to Ynys Awen, and then from there to the heart of the isle, all the way to the peak. Some say the entire isle is nothing but the roots of Mon Coimhead and it is from there that all the Awen springs from, like mountain-streams. Oh, the memories are still branded to my mind. Each step of the trail was a step back further into the mists of time. Then when I reached the summit, holding vigil for an entire night, it was like entering legends themselves.

Geography

The mountain is massive, with its ridges and shoulders stretching from the summit all the way down to the shore, so to be on the island is to be on the mountain. Yet it is the summit that is considered the most sacred. For at the very top, the peak flattens out into a circular platform, with an unobstructed view of every horizon. Those who stand here can see an entire day pass through the isles, watching Lynur on his journey. Faded runes in a forgotten tongue are carved into the edge of the summit.   A narrow path winds down and completely around the mountain from the summit. As it continues its way to the shore, it encircles the island three times.

Fauna & Flora

Only great owls live near the summit and small mammals they prey on. Not even moss grows once the final stretch of the trail is reached. Some say the owls are the guardians of the mountain, ancient spirits embodied so they might drive away any considered unworthy. Tales speak of pilgrims driven away from the mountain by flights of these owls.   On midsummer and midwinter, something peculiar happens. Within the many cracks that circle the summit, small flowers bloom that grow nowhere else. In midsummer, it is the Dawnflower, a small, delicate flower of the most brilliant orange that blooms at dawn and dies by sunset. In midwinter, it is the Moonflower, another tiny, delicate flower that gleams with the faintest sheen of silver beneath the moonlight. It blooms at dusk and dies by dawn. Legends claim these flowers were planted by Lynur and his lover so they might always remember each other.
