Ajnah, the First Consul
Bellaron didn't become the capital of a sweeping Republic overnight, and in fact spent centuries under the proxy rule of dwarves before humans overthrew them and became tyrants themselves for a while. Ajnah was born to a prominent apothecary who fell from grace as religious politics advanced one temple's ecclesiarchy into a position close to the current tyrant, who exiled most apothecaries in favor of faith healing. Though often effective, it could be difficult to acquire and left to much to chance in Ajnah's eyes. She remained in the city after her father was exiled, working with a resistance group who eventually stormed the palace and executed the tyrant along with most of his staff. In creating the republic that followed, Ajnah was voted in to one of the first two consul positions.
Ajnah proved to be not only a prolific legal mind but also a general philosopher whose ideas would shape Republic thought from that day forward. Many of the city's laws were amended or added at the republic's creation, and Ajnah saw to the majority of them personally, getting most ratified by the senate and tribune. She also created a philosophical discipline dedicated to observing the natural world in a systematic way, and deriving all knowledge from observation and logic. This put her at odds with religious authorities in the city, though Ajnah used her position and influence to cripple the temple who exiled her father, and left the others with little hope of strong support from the new political body. Though temples and myths are both alive and well in the republic even today, mystic traditions have gone underground, and ecclesiarchies have very little power.
Ajnah's philosophy has created a rather stark view of the world, with most in the Republic seeing things in terms of black and white, right and wrong. This has given them the conviction needed to spread their cultural ideals, though for obvious reasons, they are rarely well received initially.
