Xi's Bane

When the goddess Xi found out her husband Anno the Light desired the sun more than her she flew into a jealous rage. Drawing on all her power, she moved the moon to blot out the sun and block it from The Middle Lands. As the moon began covering the sun, some of Xi's children distracted their farther so that he would not notice. When the sun was completely blocked out, Anno became aware of the absence of light and looked for sun. He found Xi holding the moon in front of the sun and became angry. He and Xi fought for control of the moon, during which the seas flooded the lands and millions perished. Finally Anno was able to wrest control of the moon away from Xi and return it to it's normal movement through the sky. As punishment, he banished Xi, and their children that participated to the The Lower Lands.
Xi's Bane orbits Kyrn every 30 days. It is said that the Dark Ones perform their vile acts on the nights of the new moon as they plot to unleash Xi from her prison at the Post of Hope. Astronomers and members of the Children of the Light keep an eye on the Bane of Xi as it progresses through the sky to determine if her power is growing. It is known that an eclipse portends an incursion of the Fallen as Xi's powers are momentarily at their strongest and she can open a gate from The Lower Lands and send her dark armies into the world.

Geography

Xi's Bane is a large moon and looking at it from the Kyrn, is appears to be medium gray in coloring. The surface has a number of craters that viewable with the naked eye, and those are thought to be the battle scars of the fight between Xi and Anno as they fought for control of the moon. Many scholars believe the grey color is the dust of the Armies of Xi as Anno obliterated them with the light of the sun. Necromancers, in particular, are very interested in possessing rocks from moon meteorites that fall to Kyrn for use in their arcane rites. It is said that these moonstones increase the power of spells cast on nights of the full moon.
Two large craters on the moon are called Xi's shackles as they are about the same size and seem to have a chain of smaller craters linking them together. A third crater, called the Heart of Darkness is much darker than the rest of the surface of the moon. It is thought that, that was once where Xi resided before she was sent to the The Lower Lands.

History

The last time Xi's Bane caused a full eclipse was before the founding of the Empire of Kyrnia and it marked the start of the last incursion of the Fallen.  Since then, partial eclipses have occurred at irregular intervals, and they always signaled the start of a period of unrest and conflict from the Dark Ones and the Fallen.
