The Skull of Aranthoth
One of the founders of the Seekers of the Key, the mage Aranthoth, was also the first to delve into necromancy as a way to extend his natural life and give himself more time to discover the hidden secrets of magic. When he was able to uncover the secret of becoming a lich, he had his apprentice write the procedure on his skull using the blood of a newborn royal infant.
Aranthoth lived for hundreds of years as an elf before transforming himself into a lich and then he existed for many more centuries before a jealous rival organized a raid on Aranthoth's fortress. Many hundreds of warriors, mages, priests and rogues died during that assault against the Lich and his undead minions. In the ned the Lich was defeated, and the Skull was taken and given to the Witch of Satirith who then used it to turn herself into a Lich using the directions she found on the Skull.
Since that time, the Skull of Aranthoth has been shared by the Seekers of the Key amongst those that have proven their loyalty and dedication to their cause. Being selected to receive the Skull of Aranthoth is the highest honor a Seeker can receive from his/her peers and is the invitation to the inner circle of the group. Occasionally, the new inner circle member may decide to not return the Skull, but that ultimately leads to their destruction as the rest of the Seekers immediately move to eliminate the oath breaker.
