Seekers of the Key
The Seekers of the Key are an ancient brotherhood that was dedicated to the discovery and control of the source of all magic. The first members were made up of clerics, druids, mages and sorcerers who came together to understand how their different methods of using magic were similar in some things but different in others. They believed that the at one point all magic came from one source and that it was somehow shattered. The group hoped to be able to reverse that, and reunify magic, to allow them greater power than they currently held.
The Seekers started pursuing methods to extend their lives so that they may continue to search for the magic unification that would give them power to rival the Fey Lords or even the Risen themselves. There research determined that magic power is directly related to lifespan. Many of the Seekers turned to necromancy as a way to extend their time and increase their power.
In the centuries that have followed, the Seekers of the Key resorted to immoral methods of finding that which they seek. The group is rumored to have been behind instances of ritual sacrifices, followed by raising the person form the dead several days later so that they may question them about the after life, and what they have seen.
While many members of the group have been found and destroyed over the years, many others have hidden themselves and withdrawn from society. These hidden Seekers are still thought to be working their dark magics and practicing immoral acts to extend their lives and learn more about the breaking of magic. The last Seeker to be found and destroyed had correspondence with other members of the Seekers, indicating that their were at least three others in existence at the time of the founding of the Empire of Kyrnia, but none have been recorded as being found since then. Some historians researching the Great Fallen Incursion, have hypothesized that one of these Seekers was ultimately responsible for opening the gate that allowed the Fallen to enter the Middle Lands.
