Katas
The Wall of the Empire
Katas is a small but important county on the border with the Horse Clan's lands. It suffers constant raids and attacks making it a dangerous place to live, or even simply to travel through. The Count is a distant relative of the Empress, and is more often at her court than here in his lands. While he is often absent, he takes the defense of the county very seriously, and has spent much money on building defenses for the four main towns of this region.
Structure
A council of advisors, made up of the leaders of the three largest towns outside of the capital, plus several heads of gilds, and a few officials in his castle help and advise the Count on the running of the affairs of state.
Culture
Katas is a small county, and it seems that everyone known everyone else. They are friendly and welcoming, but they are not complacent. They know that at any moment raiders could appear on the horizon, so they are prepared to flee to safety, and re-build if needed later.
History
The County of Katas was created after the Great Fallen Incursion to protect the Empire from the Horse Clans. The first Count of Katas was a relative, a nephew, of the Emperor, and so the Count comes from the Imperial bloodline.
Demography and Population
Military
The soldiers of katas are trained in protecting the towns from the raids of the Horse Clans, but they are not used offensively to go after the raiders. The soldiers are trained in archery and crossbows, as well as how to repel assaults against the walls and gates of the towns. They take guarding the gates and entrance to the towns very seriously, and few are let into the city without a careful search and identification. Several times, the Horse Clans have tried to sneak in a few warriors to open the gates at the charge of the raiders, and once it almost worked. So visitors are carefully inspected.
Agriculture & Industry
The farmers and ranchers of Katas are all located very close to the walls of the towns. They grown what they can, and often harvest a little early for it is better to get some crop in, than to lose it all to raiders. harvest season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for that reason.
Myshell, Lashield and Storhand have some mining operations in the nearby hills. The mines are heavily fortified, and at any sign of raiders, the mine entrances are closed and are nearly impenetrable.
Trade & Transport
Katas imports a lot of food, grains and other items that fall into short supply when the raiders are about. Each town has well stocked granaries and supplies for this eventuality. Fresh fruits and vegetables often bring a high price in the spring after a winter of living off of dried meats and bread.
