The Fading Citadel

Purpose / Function

While it once stood as a series of manned watchtowers overlooking the single easily traversable pass, The Fading Citadel has since fallen to ruin, no longer inhabited by civilization.

Alterations

In the centuries since it was abandoned, the Fading Citadel has been largely reclaimed by nature. While it sits in a mountain pass, the years of weather beating have rendered much of the citadel a ruin, though a few stalwart towers still stand tall in the few nooks of the pass that have suffucuent windbreaks.

Architecture

Stone-and-wood construction makes up what remains of the towers of the Fading Citadel. The last, fading remnants of a long forgotten houses sigil are all that remains of the paint that once adorned the walls where mighty gates once stood.

Defenses

While it is now a ruin, the citadel was once a high-towered fortress that stretched across the entire width of the pass that crosses the Withered Spine, the remnants of ancient ballistae and catapults now litter the ground where the interior of the citadel once was. While the citadel should, in theory, be easy to find, it has been reported that the citadel disappears from the pass entirely, and may only be visible on the Material Plane at certain times, or under certain circumstances.

History

This citadel once stood as a safe haven for travelling merchant, peddlers, military caravans and common folk seeking to shorten their trip across the Withered Spine. While the trip is often perilous due to the devious terrain and beastly wildlife, those who could make it to the citadel would have a safe place to rest for a time before continuing across the pass. When the country of Froenia split into several smaller nations, however, the fighting within the pass was intense, with countless factions vying for control of the pass. Eventually, after countless battles and changes in control, the citadel was too battle worn to be maintained, and it was abandoned, and now the pass serves as a barrier for all but the most daring of travelers.
