Razormaw Basilisk

Endolin Divider

Make no mistake, the Progenitor is surely on your side if you walk away from an encounter with one of these. Hide like stone, teeth like blades, and a ferocity like nothing else, these beasts are prey to none. Just the way I like it.

Prey Upon Predators

Beasts that stalk the forested fjords of northern Endolin, monstrous nightmares that crave an appetite for everything in its path. Even these are understatements that people who inhabit these lands use to describe a razormaw basilisk. Very deadly, they are also a very rare encounter, though no one has ever denied its existence. With far too many stories recounting the terror and bloodshed wrought by one of these creatures, great care is taken when one is inclined to travel.   Lone wolves among their kind, a razormaw basilisk hunts alone and seeks out new prey every day. Only when mating has one ever been witnessed to be around another. Though mating is certainly along the lower end of their instinctual purpose, nothing to them accounts for greater pleasure than finding prey. Sometimes for food, sometimes simply for the thrill of the hunt.   These blue behemoths, despite their reckless abandon, their fierce strength, and their animistic rage, seek something in their hunt. They seek perfection. The perfect kill. One does not stop, and one does not tire until it's found the perfect kill. No one knows what a basilisk does once that has been realized, for everyone believes not a single basilisk has ever experienced it.

Seeking Perfection

A story is wrapped around them, told to date far back into Endolin's past. When the first basilisk ever existed, just after the reformation of Endolin when it split into three different provinces. Once there was an elf named Anagh. He was a priest over the new Wirenth province, found in the untamed north. Like all others, he worshiped the Court Lord.   But he sought perfection unlike anyone else. He demolished his home and built it again and again, always dissatisfied with its appearance. His food, he cooked in every different way, always dissatisfied with its taste. Even his speech he changed day after day, always bored with the very words he and those around him spoke. But never did it feel perfect.   So one day, he called upon the Court Lord with a prayer he practiced many times over. Feeling it wasn't perfect enough, Anagh was surprised when he was answered. However, against his hopes, the Court Lord declared Anagh's path doomed to fail, and it would never lead him to the comprehension of true perfection. Anagh needed to change his ways.

Finding Chaos

This response angered Anagh, so greatly that he cursed the Court Lord, even stepping down as its priest. Calling his people fools, he sought out a different entity, one his people spoke of. The fabled witch of the stream, swaying through every wave of every stream, waiting to be called upon by a wayfarer, granting them any wish.   Coming upon the streams, Anagh called out to her to make his perfection a reality. Obliging those words, she offered him a potion, one she promised would let him become capable of feeling the perfection he searched for. With hope instilled yet again, and pride resurfacing, he didn't think twice as he took the potion and drank it.   But when he drank it, his body began morphing. Muscles grew disproportionate, sun-tanned skin turned hard, rocky, and blue. Teeth became fang, finger became claw. Elf became animal. He became a being capable of his perfection. But never did he realize the perfection he looked for turned out to be nothing more the insanity.

Great witch. Prove to me that your power is as real as my vision. Make what I seek a reality, make me find perfection.

Hearty Resources

A razormaw basilisk is the most feared animal among all settlements in the north. But one can not mistake the valuable hide that makes it so tough. Thick and flexible, a basilisk's skin is excellent for use in crafting defensive gear like armor, or even outfitting an existing set with such material.   Its teeth and fangs, both measuring nearly six inches long are valuable trade material. And the bone that grows out its back, black and rocky from its recklessness adopts similar properties to even that of obsidian.   Some attribute that back to the story, calling it one of the effects of the witch's potion.   Even so, very few hunters who even make a claim to begin hunting any these ever follow through. Ryfon, though he is the most successful and renown hunter of razormaw basilisks in Endolin today, he is also among a very small contingent of those who do.   He is among an even smaller amount of those who actually survive.

Can't tell you how many times I've hunted these. How many close calls I've had. You want me to tell you its weakness? Ain't got any. Want me to tell you the best trap to catch it? Kill it.

Running Leap. The basilisk's long jump is up to 40 feet and its high jump is up to 20 feet when it has a running start.   Keen Hearing. The basilisk has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing.   Wounded Fury. While the basilisk is below half its maximum hit points, it gains resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks.   Trampling Charge. If the basilisk moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a claw or bite attack on the same turn, that target must succeed a DC18 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the basilisk can make one claw attack against it as a bonus action.

Actions

Multiattack. The basilisk makes three attacks: one with its bite, one with its claws, and one with its tail.   Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC18). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the basilisk can't bite another target.   Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 7) slashing damage.   Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6 + 7) bludgeoning damage.

Carnivorous Omnivores

Razormaw basilisks are, by definition, barbaric animals. They hunt recklessly and feast brutally. They dwell wherever they choose when sleep beckons. Their instinct knows no bounds.   They are always found within the Mawktooth Fjords of northern Endolin, where they stalk up high among cliffsides and thick forest branches. Once prey is seen, nothing can stand in their way of the chase. Trees will be toppled, ground upturned. Carnage will reign until either the prey is killed, or the basilisk is. Most often, the first event occurs.

Perfect and barbaric often mean the same thing for these monsters.

Female Basilisks

Female basilisks are known to exist despite their origin never clearly being specified. But even so, it doesn't retract from a female's innate instinct to be more fearsome and lethal than even its male counterpart.   Basilisks hunt alone and often avoid each other. The only time when at least two can be seen together is when mating. But even after, the born is left to be raised by the female until its mother's death. Some theorize that one element of a basilisk's rage comes from witnessing the death of its mother basilisk.

I still have yet to kill a female basilisk. And one still has yet to kill me. Funny enough, I call that a win-win.

Ryfon

Very few elves commit acts that are in any way similar to hunting. They do believe beauty comes through their efforts to cultivate the lands, but killing its wildlife is seen as detrimental to that vision. Ryfon is a very rare exception to that rule, having suffered the loss of his family to a razormaw basilisk coated in scars.   Transformed by grief and hurt, Ryfon is typically acclaimed by most elves to have forsaken the ways of beauty. In some ways, he believes that true. For at the moment he doesn't look for beauty, he looks for revenge.   For nearly a century, he has devoted himself to hunting down razormaw basilisks. But more importantly, he will never stop until he holds the jawbone of that scarred basilisk.

I hear the one that took my family is bigger than the rest, deadlier than the rest. I hear them calling me insane to try and hunt it down. If only they knew what it was like. To see my Vyrna and Kyrna slaughtered like worthless prey. To hear future stories of its rampage. They say it seeks the perfect kill, so were they not enough!? I won't give it anything but a perfect death.
