Society of the Ebon Flame

The oldest known criminal organization on Kruos is the fancifully named Society of the Ebon Flame, more commonly referred to as the Black Flames. The origins of the society are, for the most part, lost to history but it is fairly established fact that the society originated in Ziamid and its leadership is assumed to still make their home there. It seems to be established fact that the Ebon Flame refers to the organizations totem, the Black Dragon and the resembalence of the Ziamidian Peninsula to the head of a dragon would likely be further evidence of their geographical origin.
That the Black Flames are known at all is a testament to their pervasiveness and power in the world. The whispers being impossible to contain, they have seized upon them to create a culture of fear around their very name. Any sort of mischief that occurs in any city or town of size in the world seems to get attributed to them which just enhances their reputation.
While they get blamed for everything from murder to petty theft it is quite clear that they are the biggest players in common areas of organized crime such as smuggling and theft. They are the big fish of the underworld and have their hands in everything, but criminal chaos is bad for business so they act as an unofficial check against criminal elements that would be more destructive or deadly. One might consider them a necessary evil in the larger cities of the world where police forces would otherwise struggle to keep order in such large populations. In fact, in some of the poorer neighbordhoods of the larger cities the Black Flames have a reputation for vigilante justice and providing for the community. Undoubtedly these acts of benevolence are always in the group's best interests but they enhance their reputations nonetheless.
