The Kristomian Civil War

Written by KrispyKrissow

The Conflict

Prelude

In 1987, Prime Minister Pterredaus Perka was assassinated at a conference in Lencher, Lenchia. In the Snap General election that followed, Cerce Blartum of the Kristomian Union of Fascists was voted into office. During his inaugural ceremony at Fernopila Square on the 4th January 1988, he proclaimed himself as 'Supreme leader of Grand Kristomia' and ruthlessly murdered King Tagra IX and the Royal Family. As well as that, he also signed a bill that day that stated that: 'Democratic, Marxist(-Leninist) and Monarchist Parties are to be outlawed and the perpetrators are to be given the death sentence of Electric chair.'(The Blartum Bill Chapter 2 Section 1). Over the next 3 years over 35,000 Kristomians would die at the hands of that infamous Electric chair. Because of this bill, many were scared to rise up to the right thing, but in 1990, Senator of Albyvania and active member of the KUF pre-election John Freeth caused protests and riots in Septon and Farmton-two large cities in Albyvania. After a week of protesting, Freeth and his partner/aide Nico Rann declared war for a Democratic Government installed in Kristomia.

Deployment

As a Democratic team, Freeth immediately called on the help of the UN and NATO in order to take down Blartum. Powers such as the USA, UK, Germany and France flew into Septon and advanced into Platueu. Blartum's regiments from Cambria instinctively started moving into Lenchia territory in order to combat the Democratic forces. For more information on this mini-war (The Initial War of the Southwest) I will have an article up on it soon. Anything with the initials KCW in the title will tell you that it is an article to do with the Kristomian Civil War.

Battlefield

Over the 16 years this horrendous war took, the Kristomian Civil war claimed the most lives from a civil war ever in the history of mankind. A 2009 survey estimates that 3.3 Million people died in battle, that's not even including casualties from Air raids and sieges in their homes. The final battle before the death of Blartum and the surrender of the KUF took place in and around the City of Granthet in Brumali. On May 30th 2007, Democratic forces arrived in the village of Plannecvew 4 miles east of Granthet. The civilians immediately gave their village to the democratic side in order to prevent further destruction. Fernus Bannlewiyret-one of the villagers-objectified to this as he was a member of the KUF. Using a payphone, Fernus called the KUF centre in Aldwich-capitol city of Brumali-and requested assistance at Plannecvew. The Democratic forces stayed the night in a farmers fields, allowing the perfect time for the Fascists-who had just arrived-to strike. Around 1 AM on he 31st May, the 17th Brumal squadron fired its first shots at the campers nearby. This awoke Freeth and his armies who instantly armed themselves to face the enemy. Realising they just woke up the enemy, the Fascists used up as much ammo as they could on the Democrats. When they ran out, the Democrats started advancing on them and firing away. It wasn't until 4 AM that the last Fascist fled. This was the Plannecvew skirmish.

Conditions

Over the next 16 years, food and clothing supplies ran short in order to keep the demand for comfortable lives on the front lines stable. It wasn't until the Democrats seized Fernopolis in early 1992 until food and clean water from NATO could reached occupied Kristom. If NATO attempted to bring food to Kristom through Grand Kristomian airspace the airplanes would be sure to be shot down by anti-aircraft guns. Ships from allies couldn't get to close to the Laylaful close overwise cannons which had been upgraded for the modern era could attack them. Once Freeth and the republic controlled Enara for the first time in 1995 when food could easily be accessed from Indonesia to the Enaran port of Boston. Meanwhile, on the Fascist side, Blartum would be happy to starve his people to keep the upper-class on his side. Many men, women and children would starve at the hands of Blartum. Conditions on the front lines of both sides were terrible-the Fascist side more so than the Democratic side. Conditions weren't as bad as conditions in other wars-e.g. the trenches of WW1-but many still went hungry and thirsty and many died of disease and famine.

The Engagement

At the 1991 Soviena conference, Blartum and Freeth came up with the Rules of Engagement for the Kristomian Civil War-in which they devised 7 rules for war in Kristomia. Some of these rules included Rule 2-The right for defence and Rule 5-The right of Civilian detention (Civilians of the opposition can be detained by the other side.)

Outcome

When the war finally ended on the 25th June 2007, John Freeth held a speech in Aldwich announcing that the Democrats had won and talked about the perseverance and how diligent the people of Kristom was. It was also at the Aldwich where he announced that he would be closing approximately 90% of the continent and made Aldwich the new capital of Kristom. He said that the landscape of Kristomia was too destroyed to inhabit yet and created the Department of the Kristomian Clean-Up. Freeth became leader of Beagon and Nido Rann became President of Kristom. Rann granted Beagon independence after a 2008 referendum.

Aftermath

As stated before at the Aldwich speech, Freeth crated the Department of the Kristomian Clean-Up. Scientists estimated it would take more than 110 years to get the entirety of the Kristomian continent cleaned and set for inhabitation again. In 2009, Beagon became independent and Kristom was doing better than ever under the leadership of Nido Rann. The economy was booming, morale was at an all time high and Rann was an incredibly popular President. However, Nido was assassinated while meeting members of the community outside Mountaris state Hospital in Nebula. This started a domino effect. Vice President Sepronus Tanns was sworn into office and took over the reigns that Rann had left behind. Tanns was despised and, under pressure from Independence Separatists in all States, eventually triggered Article 19 of the Kristomian Constitution;'The current President of Kristom has a right to separate the Country into smaller states under a strict set of rules. These include that over half the population wants independence, the President must be under pressure from the populus and over half of the Presidents advisors agree with the proposal.'-Kristomian Constitution Chap 1 Art.19 Sect.1. After the proposal was approved, Kristom was split into 21 different separate entities on the 21st July 2015 which still thrive to this day.

Historical Significance

The history of the war really stems back over a millennium to the start of 'Modern Kristom'-the Kristom pre-1988-in the year 771 AD. There was a lot of civil unrest as a new, unpopular dynasty was in power. There were rebellions and schemes for a new dynasty from Cereceus to rule-the Blartums. In 1966, Cerce Blartum was born to Fernus and Amicta Blartum in Duexbridge, Cereceus. In 1977, his best friend Trillion Bahara was  hit by the senator of Cereceus' car and killed on his way to hospital in the ambulance. This caused Cerce to become mentally ill and in 1985 created the Kristomian Union of Fascists. Major members included Cerce's brother-Tagra, Fernus Beston, and John Freeth-who would later declare war on Blartum for a democratic government. In 1987, Pteradaus Perka is assassinated and Cerce is voted into office where he installs a Fascist campaign. 1990-Freeth declares war on Blartum for a democratic government and war.

Legacy

What the Civil War gave the world was not just destruction, but a set of morals. One of these was to not abuse power like Blartum did. Cerce Blartum was tyrannical-killing anybody who denied his overwhelming power. He was mentally ill and didn't understand the people of the world after the death of his friend in 1977. If someone was to abuse power as head of office again in Kristomia, the people would fight back-presumably peacefully. Another rule set in place after the war was that every mentally-ill person in Kristomia was to seek mandatory treatment or therapy in order to prevent another leader like Blartum. Rules like these are still in place to this day.

In Literature

Many papers and books have been written about the war itself and the politics and people behind it. First-hand accounts of the war have been published-such as 'Diary of a Life' which followed the life of Arctus Crossro-a child/young adult who lived in Boslav through the civil war. Pieces of fiction have been written about the war as well. The most famous of these being 'the Divided Star' by Thigal author Tagra Septo. It follows the story of Maddra-a teenage girl living in Fernopolis. She lives through the siege from the Democrats, the artificial tsunami of '92 and air raids galore. Another cult classic is 'Lencher' by Nanukka Fliccvan which follows 2 sides-Ptederadaus Perka's side and Blartum's side. It's also commentary on the mental health of Blartum and the popular but insecure Perka.

Technological Advancement

Several new inventions that revolutionised Kristomian warfare were created sometime in the Kristomian civil war. It was late 1990 when the civil war started. Obviously, firearms, explosives and engines such as tanks, airplanes and jeeps. Tagra Watson Jr. (Grandson of scientist Norman Watson) was a leading contributor to creating new ideas and machines for Freeth's side. One of these was the Albyvanian rifle, the barrel of which could hold up to 30 small but deadly bullets. An invention made by his grandfather was modernised for the war-the Beacharan Beacon is so called because it was first tested on the dunes of the Beacharan desert during the 1930's. In the war it was used to alert the allied side if Fascists were approaching. In order to stay one step ahead of Freeth, Blartum sent spies into enemy lines in order to steal Watson's inventions. In 2000, Watson was actually captured and interrogated by Blartum and forced Freeth to pay a ransom. Blartum also had a few ideas up is sleeve. One of these was the Leningrad method. It was a new type of siege his leading Tactical Warfare officer-Tagra Blartum had created. It was to create 5 thin rings around a settlement while the people inside starve. This turned out to be a complete failure and cost lives from the Fascist army.

The Republic of Kristomia

Strength

At the start of the war, the Democrats didn’t get many supporters due to Blartum’s immense strength, but as NATO’s armies started arriving in Albyvania, people started joining the side that they thought was right. The majority of Kristomia was on Freeth’s side but they were to scared to admit it. As well as this, the fascists wouldn’t let their territory join the enemy side.

Casualties

The Kristomian civil war was the most deadliest civil war in humanities history. On Freeth’s democratic side, 4 million civilians and soldiers died at the hands of Blartum’s fascist forces and the KUF. Another 8 million soldiers and civilians were wounded or injured.

Objectives

John Freeth used to be part of the KUF- Kristomian Union of Fascists- but he became unhappy and felt like leader Cerce Blartum was an unfit leader and didn’t feel like Fascism or Nationalism worked. With his friend Nido Rann, he gathered support in Albyvania before declaring war for a Democratic Government on Cerce Blartum.
