Hydra
Basic Information
Anatomy
Generally larger and more stocky than normal dolphin, bulbous hydrocephalic cranium shape, broader/wider snout and mouth, un-uniform heterodont dentition, tawny coloration.
Shrunken and malleable dorsal fin, enlarged pectoral and tail fins with signs of manual dexterity. Highly resilient, rough, shark-like skin, including microscopic dermal denticles.
Hermaphroditic, age seemingly indicated by increasing numbers of fully formed full size dermal denticles (i.e. literal full size teeth) protruding from skin flaps at random points on body.
Genetics and Reproduction
Genetic analysis of specimens shows extreme rate of variability and astounding genetic change from Common Bottlenose Dolphin (believed most recent extant ancestor), as well as possible hybridization with other unknown species. Analysis about origins still inconclusive.
Beyond observed population explosion and hermaphroditic traits, reproductive cycles, gestation periods, etc. unknown currently.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Observed to have poor vision in day/high light/high visibility conditions, but excellent vision at night/in low light/low visibility conditions. Hearing and echolocation believed to be superior to that of other dolphins, as is sense of smell.
