A cityscape rife with slums sprawls with no end. Smog hangs low in the air and crowds of people clog the streets. Crime syndicates and mobs lurk in the shadows and extort the citizens for their gold. Hunters and gatherers risk life and limb delving into the great network of tunnels and caverns and the untamed jungles of fungi and mutant flora and fauna underneath the clogged streets above to provide the desperate remains of a civilization with food. Brave yet naively optimistic pilgrims venture into the Fringe and beyond, uninhabitable lands of ruins, dunes, dust storms, and radioactive smog left from a catastrophic failure of all magic in search of a supposed promised land that they believe a lush land reclaimed by nature has erased civilizations own downfall, itself.

Long ago this planet, the Kralærius Stratonexus, was populated by a great civilization—the precursors. They wielded the power of magical technology, powered by raw mana—pure magic. The power of their mana reactors and the infinite possibilities of what their magæ-forged objects made them nigh unstoppable—until the Citramagæ. This cataclysmic event came with no warning. All of a the foundation of their great civilization was there undoing. The innumerable mana infused machines they built an empire on tore themselves apart in destructive explosions, releasing a deadly smog that kills and warps all living things it touches into the air rendering most of the realm uninhabitable—except for Citradex Terminus.

The Citradex Terminus Bastion City, and civilization's last foothold is the final known inhabitable place in the realm. It is a vast, overcrowded, polluted, and corrupt megacity that spans for whole provinces, its true vastness forgotten after centuries of records faded out of memory, tucked away in some dusty archive waiting to be rediscovered. The ancient metropolis is kept safe from the deadly mage-smog that surrounds it by the final magæpparatus known as the Sanctum Apparatus, a device that took the precursors what power was left to them to forge the technologies that made their mighty civilization once great.

Completed a few years after the Citramagæ, the Sanctum Apparatus is the sole thing that keeps the last spark of hope alive for what remains of life in on the Kralærius Stratonexus. Without the Sanctum Apparatus the mage smog that surrounds the city would engulf it snuffing out the last of all life. However, after countless millennia with little thought given to maintaining the memory of the past its location was ultimately lost to time. Many uncountable thousands have searched for the Sanctum Apparatus and many countless thousands have failed.

Now it is 1,537 years after the Citramagæ and it has been discovered that the only thing that keeps inevitable destruction from the last civilization is failing. All recent evidence shows that area of habitable area in Bastion City is shrinking as the outer area of its previously habitable land is swallowed by the mage-smog. The search for the Sanctum Apparatus has intensified as the whole of civilization fights to save itself from the inevitable with a frantic fervor. Bastion City is on borrowed time...
