Transmitted when a tainted gem is used for power. Once depletion threshold is reached the gemstone with explode sending shrapnel into the surrounding environment and any left over energy gets converted into a gaseous form. Should any shard pierce the skin or gas be inhaled the person is infected. Once infected boils will start to form on the skin and randomly burst. Should any fluid from the boils come in contact with another person it will spread.

Causes

How the corruption of a gemstone occurs is still unknown, all attempts to reproduce the corruption process have failed.

Symptoms

The ailment goes through a variety of changes as the condition worsens.
Contact: Glowing purple spots appear on the area of infection
1-2 Hours: Spots grow in size and depth covering a larger portion of the skin and moving into underlying tissue
3-4 Hours: First onset of boils appear at this point patient is experiencing burning sensation across infected area
5-8 Hours: Boils have spread across roughly half of the body, major blood vessels begin to glow a dull purple. Significant pain and gasping for air occurs
9-Death: Whole surface of the body has been covered in boils. Death normally occurs within 3-4 hours
24-48 Hours after death: Host body is no longer infectious

Treatment

If caught before boils have appeared on the flesh desease can be treated through dialisis, rending stone, or through amputation of the infected limb.

Prognosis

If not treated within the first few hours death is garenteed.

Affected Groups

While possible for anyone to become infected, there are far more outbreaks in poverty stricken areas as the buying of certified gemstones is cost prohibitied.

Prevention

The use of blighted stones is strictly prohibited, should you identify one present it to the proper authorities for immediate disposal. Should proper disposal be impossible dig a hole or lock stone in an airtight container and mark as hazardous material.

Cultural Reception

Due to the highly infectious nature of the infection most cultures have taken to eliminating the host and either incinerating the body or dumping body far from any possible hosts. All who have come in contact with patient are locked into quarentiene.
