I pledge to write at least 10,000 words or world building during December 2021
Main Goals
hopefully I am going to focus on 2 things, Geographic Locations and the Species that inhabit them, because that is what i find the most fun to create. This is, of course, a horrible idea and going to lead me down so many wikipedia and or google rabbit holes that I will get distracted. Luckily, i already have some species to write about from Mapvember and Summer Camp, so hopefully i will focus on those and not branch out too much. the end goal is to even have 5E compatible stat blocks for some of them.
As such, the species i intend to focus on are (now with PROMPTS!):
- Describe an apex predator in your world (an apex predator is a predator at the top of a food chain that is not preyed upon by any other animal) - Sea Serpents their lifecycle, and their relationship with Serpents Bay and the Spawning Sea "The big ones eat just about everything, so just about everything eats the little ones so they dont get big"
- Write about a species in you world that is bred or farmed for a high value resource. (Summer Camp 2020) - Outh Bees - because not everything the the Myrdhor Desert wants to kill you
- Describe an ambush predator in your world -Rock Lobster because the above exception proves the rule
- Describe a predator adapted from TV a movie, or other pop culture source - Jaccast Think the monsters from pitch black crossed with crystalline wolves.
- Describe a carnivorous plant in your world? - Hunter's Bane , more parasitic than carnivorous, shoots seeds into passing animals to germinate.
- Whales are the largest animals on Earth. Describe a "larger than life" animal on your world. Cloudtusks
- Describe an animal with a unique form of locomotion (moving around) that exists in your world. Marine Armadillo
- Describe a species in your world used for medicinal purposes. How is it farmed/bred/harvested? Is it only beneficial or can it be abused? (Summercamp 2018) - The Helping Hand Frog "Look, I know they aren't harming anything, but there is no way those frogs are natural. How could any living creature naturally evolve to be a nearly universal prosthetic?"
- Vampires and werewolves exist in many worlds across almost all of sci-fi and fantasy, does your world have an equivalent to either (or both)? How similar are they to any established tropes? Is there anything that makes the ones in your world unique? - Vampires, what are they, how is one transformed, do they really control most of the worlds shipping? Whats this about a war with the Fae?
Should inspiration strike elsewhere I will of course dive in head first. As this pledge is also acting as a tracker/table of contents for this years WorldEmber, below is a where links to any non-species or prompt specific articles will be posted.
Prompt and other Non-Species articles
- What's your world's largest ocean, and what lurks in it depths? Do people fear it or own it? - Expansion on as yet unfinished Mapvember prompt. related to sea serpents.
- Describe a physical condition associated with old age in your world? Does it only affect certain species? (Summer Camp 2019) -
Excellent pledge! Good luck in your goals for WorldEmber this year :D
