Nidauvie

While many people all over the universe knows them as the most powerful magic wielders, to the point of believing that they inhabit the mytical "Seventh Plane", for them the ability to communicate with magic is just part of life.   Just like human beings all over the universe are spected to breath from the start, they are expected to have some level of connection with magic. As they grow up and become aware of that link, most of them use it in a more deliberate way. In that they are like many other magic wielders: determination is usually related with the power of the spells and the precision in the results.   They don't think of magic capabilities as such. For them those are regular strength, regular cleverness, regular intelligence, and so on, depending on the field where they are applying them.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Besides their regular senses--ear and smell adapted to the particular conditions of the light caves--, the average Nidauvie can feel the behavior of magic around them.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

None. While occasionally you can find inherited names in a family or from a parent's friend, the usual practice is name each baby with any name both parents like for any reason.   The only interesting detail about names, is that they have so many names with meaning in other languages (or directly the same than alien names), that you would think they are in constant communication with cultures from other worlds. Maybe they were, in a very distant past.

Major Organizations

The Exilement Court

A group of very experienced observers of human behavior, one for each 1000 inhabitants, who study each alleged case of greed (usually in small teams) and vote to determine if the Exile is required. Because the decision has to be unanimous, exilement is both uncommon and unappealable.

Career assignment board

Simply known as "The Board", the name is clearly archaic and doesn't really fit with the current purpose and hierarchy of the organization. Each extended family has one person in the board, so to speak, and they work along with teachers to help teenagers to determine what they want to work at when they are older. They see that each child has access to common knowledge and the chance to explore their skills, and when the time comes, they coordinate efforts with the teachers and experts of any job the kid is interested in.

Law improvement facilitators

Technically there is one per 500 people, but they tend to have other job on regular times and work only in spreading information and taking every adult's vote when a rule or law needs to be changed. Only a few or them (one per profession) are constantly working in the analysis of changes in the environment or society that may require changes in the laws.

Professional

Each professional field (which they classify by the purpose, not by the skills or tasks) has a council or leader board, and a specific hierarchy.

Gender Ideals

None known.

Courtship Ideals

As the all nidauvie adage say: "if you like the person, show your best side first, but don't bother to try and hide the bad one, they will know anyway."

Relationship Ideals

No relationship is as important as family bonds. While there had been cases of adopted family members (orphans accepted in a home, union of two families through a couple or closed friends that belong to each family, etc) the usual is that you each person is always closer to those who raised them, and those to be related by blood.   By extension, it's important to respect and preserve the bonds between parents of a child, and those who have a history of changing partners after having a child usually end up exiled and their kids are treated as part only of the partner family, all this to "avoid complications on the family relations".   Next to family, is job. Coworkers are encouraged to have good relations, to the level of friendship, while other means of connection between people (including romantic partners with no children) are considered temporary and superfluous by most people. Nobody minds if a person gives great value to these "other relationships", as long as that doesn't interfere with family and coworkers.

Average Technological Level

Their needs are quite simple and covered by magic, but several activities are made with tools to keep some traditions or personal habits that are good for health, building relationships and seeking happiness in general.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

They have a lot of dialects from one area to another, but most of them are too similar to each others, and all of them have some slight resemblance to the First language.   They have two alphabets: female glyphs and male glyphs, mostly out of tradition.   Kids usually learn both, unless they find it difficult to draw the one assigned to the opposite gender or in the rare case of not getting along with any relative who teach it to them.   They think this was established because someone thought that each gender found it easier to draw differnt traces, since the opposite gender's glyphs are the ones that cause trouble to the kids who refuse to learn one of those alphabets. There are too few cases to gather useful information to confirm that, and the Nidauvie don't really care much for research anyway.

History

They have a curious way of measuring time, but everything seems to indicate that this culture is as old as Ogha and D'hale, and maybe related to the The Ancient somehow.   They have little records about their past, keeping only the memory of the lessons learned and just the details required to understand them. For that reason, their "history" seems to be short, and it would be easy to assume that they hadn't been around for long because of their apparent lack of progress.   Curiously enough, it seems that they had develop quite advanced magic-based technology, to levels we are not ready to understand. At some point (probably one or two millennia ago), they discarted most of it, in favor of a simple life with simple tasks and goals.

Writing & Literature

They can create records (written or audivisual) by using magic, and they do so most of the time.   They teach their children to write with pencil on paper (not ink or any form of paint) to develop fine motor skills and as a family activity. The black paper they use is often made by artisans who use magic to transform different material into sheets.   Literature and history are not often recorded by any means and more practical information is usually kept in magical records. Hand writing is used mostly as a way to meditate or even to communicate with others in a less practical way.   A common practice is the redaction of journals, used for some to keep track of changes in their habits and goals, and how those have affected their family throught the decades, and be able to make improvements in the future. Others use them for fun, to read about their past self over the centuries.   When one of them passes away, their journals face different fates depending on the kind of family they belong to, but some of them inherit specific journals to different family members and those are kept as a symbol of their conection.   While fiction exists as a form of entertainment, is not meant to last. Books (handwriten or not) are rewriten or forgoten often. The original author is always unknown, since signing your work is not a practice there and so are those who make any form or adaptation.   Other forms of literature are not necesary for the day to day live at the caves. They appear occasionally but they are either tools or solutions for a specific one-time situation, or evidence in a Trial.

Art

In the caves, this refers to anything that is designed to add beauty to a place, object or even person. Beautiful images or sounds, shapes in the garden, elaborated clothes or hairstyles, patterns on the cookies served with the tea: those are just a few examples.   The goal is to make your family or community confortable, of course. If the artist is, instead, trying to prove a point, express their own feelings in a way that makes them seem more relevant or easy to appreciate that the ones of others in the group, or is they are trying to inmortalize themself or their ideals, that is considered a form of greed.   Occasionally, art can be shared in private, as a way to connect to a single person, and just like journals, some pieces are considered symbolic to a certain link between people.
