The driver, who wore simple black garb and a brown cloak, had otherwise spoken to the lord with such ease, almost familiarity. Not a servant’s talk at all.
Dinair was upon the horses before they could bolt, ducking fearlessly into the mass of circling bodies and hooves itching to kick whatever danger approached. To the girl’s surprise, the beasts calmed somewhat within moments. Horse-magic, her father would have called it.
He was even taller this close, with overgrown brown hair that almost covered his eyes. They were some dark color she couldn’t make out. His face was young, albeit worn, and his boots were muddy. He still hadn’t sheathed his sword.

Personal history

Dinair was born to a happy, fairly successful family that served the local lord; Dinair's grandfather had saved the current lord's father from a thunder-and-lightning storm in 1832, after which the family name was changed to Stormbright. Dinair often played with the lord's children as he was growing up until his father sent him to school to learn his trade as a bodyguard. When Dinair returned, the lord's oldest son, Erwin, hired him as a personal guard for himself and his wife.
