Edrannon

History

Once every one hundred years, all four of Khthon's moons are full on the same night. Every culture on Khthon recognized the phenomenon and the majority hold festivals to mark the day, but the elves by far were most attuned to the occurrence in both a poetic and a metaphysical sense. Its most commonly accepted name, Edrannon, is a bastardization of their name for the day, roughly meaning "The Opening of the Great Door." A full moon is magically significant in nearly every system of reckoning and a full moon four times over across four different lunar cycles is much greater than the sum of its parts. For this reason, in any society with enough practitioners to warrant it, the festival of Edrannon is intensely focused on the arcane, and this perception has bled across even to cultures without a notable magical presence.

Execution

Though Edrannon festivals will differ greatly across cultures, and even from village to village, there are some commonalities so strong that they're nearly universal. The most ubiquitous is the focus on doorways and thresholds. Some areas focus on expressing openness and receiving the power or luck of the event, removing doors from their frames and opening windows, replacing them with colorful decorations. Others have a strong desire to keep the influence of the otherworldly out and will fortify their thresholds with ritual or simply boards and nails.

Participants

Another commonality across nearly every culture is that all participate in the festivities, and the highest authority both secular and arcane hold positions of great importance. Whether any of this can be attributed to the festival itself, or laid entirely on the fact that there are concrete effects to worry about or enjoy is an unsolved question.

Observance

Edrannon takes place every one hundred years just like clockwork. Though Khthon's moons are younger than the world itself, and of different ages, they each began their cycles at precisely the right time for their alignment to occur every 100th anniversary of The Forge.
