Province Keeper
The Province Keeper is a political role that was installed by Bothandal the Crafter in 358 BLC, as part of an effort to harmonize legislation in the Kingdom of Laeryll while simultaneously minimizing tensions with the kingdom's constituent provinces. While the Laeryllian Crown has formal absolute rule and can dispense justice as it sees fit, Province Keepers are given the privilege to weigh in on matters and petition the Crown. Similarly, the Keepers are open to petitions by the citizens of their designated provinces.
Province Keepers are appointed by the Crown and the rank can be taken away at the Crown's discretion. For appointments, the Crown considers political aptitude, place of birth (a Province Keeper must have been born in the respective province) and diplomatic factors. Province Keepers are based in the capital of the province they represent.
The current Province Keepers
The below table shows the current Keepers per province, including their base of operations. Note that the Small Provinces have a single Province Keeper and that Dathyll has none, as the Crown is considered to represent Dathyllian interests. Dathyll does, however, have a Deputy to the Crown who plays a similar role to the Keepers, but for the Red Rock Elves in western Dathyll. Illitran Varalei was the Province Keeper of the Small Provinces until late 903 LC, when he was removed from this office by Olyxx the Young and sent to Shyfayll due to this role in a manipulation plot against Olyxx III that culminated in an attempt to assassinate the king and caused the death of Kalied Ilbaereth. Olyxx III will still decide on the proper successor, who should be from Pothael, Northern Silimianis or Laedor Thilis.Province:
