Mirrorslate

Mirrorslate is a material that can only be created after an arduous, expensive alchemical process that lasts six to twelve months-and usually can only be afforded by the richest and most powerful in Khalar.
When finished, Mirrorslate resembles a pair of polished slate plates. Any marks made on the face where the break was made will instantly appear on the other, reversed- ignoring distance between the two slates.
Though most people think of Mirrorslate as a plate or slab, there are rumors that some spies have made small shards of a larger mirror into pendants or ring facings, and are capable of slowly passing letter-by-letter messages. No examples have been captured, however, and no government admits to possessing these.
Attempting to create a slate larger than twelve inches by twelve inches results in a strongly distorted image when viewing, for unknown reasons.

The alchemical bath required to make Mirrorslate requires over a dozen components and the composition must be constantly adjusted during production.

Manufacturing process

The blank slate must first be mined, then carefully carved and polished. Next it is immersed in an alchemical bath that must be constantly monitored and adjusted over the course of six months to a year depending on the size of the slate. At the end of this process, the slate is removed and carefully broken along a long, flat plane to produce the two halves.
Some stones are then cut at the edges and polished to be set in frames or housings for ease of carrying and protection.

Significance

The creation of Mirrorslate has allowed governments to have a massive advantage in communications, and a mad scramble is currently on to try and find any way to make the creation process faster and cheaper.
The result is that Alchemists are now far more highly valued than before. Everything from governments to private institutions are trying to find some breakthrough in production. Alchemists willing to work on the project can command high wages in many places, and there are darker rumors of abductions between institutions...
