The Fallen Maiden

She was once Morning's child, a beacon of purity and hope.
But she has shed that cloak for another, to revel in the mystery and dangers of Dusk.

Captain Meela Minuetta Saragassi

"Watch yer tongue 'round the cap'n, boy." Agazi warned in a hushed tone, his drawl and accent queer in Rynnen's ears. Weirder still were the multitude of layers he adorned himself with, plum and orange silk resting against a gilded sky blue mantle. "She'll go an' rip it out if you ain't careful."
— Ra Agazi, Cook

Early Life

Meela's first memory is the sound of water and the Hudorini bells chiming in the distance. Though her origins are shrouded in mystery, Meela was raised in the Sheltered City, surrounded by sea and storms and salty breezes. Raised as Lady Saragassi, a noblewoman of the highest order, Meela wanted for nothing and by her ninth birthday, her aasimar heritage was well known, and with greedy hearts, the Epochian Order welcomed another Daughter of Morning to their ranks.

This portrait of Lady Saragassi...
was painted by Chantilly Anweri, a famous Catalencian artist. It took six hours to complete, three days after her nineteenth birthday. Commissioned by her father nine months before Anuletti took control of Hudorini, it now hangs behind her gilded kraken-bone chair, frame charred and canvas edge blackened.   Anweri captured the way her dark, curly brown hair fades to the color of morning light, her dark gold eyes, and the cleft in her chin. In her youth, Meela was considered one of the most beautiful ladies within Hudorini, and though the suitors were plentiful, Mr. Saragassi turned every single one of them down— a count that reached well into the sixties between the ages of four and nineteen.   She considers the time captured within the beginning of the end.

Revelations

Meela knew she was adopted from quite a young age, and though she was curious about the racial aspects of what she had received from her birth parents, she wasn't much interested in the gritty details. Life in Hudorini was all she had ever known, all she ever cared to know... Until Anuletti arrived, shaking up Hudorini as a whole, and the fragile existence she had always known.   How so many in Hudorini were ignorant to the truth of slavery that enveloped their country is still unknown, but when Anuletti arrived things changed; for better and for worse.   Slaves, by the thousands, were freed from their shackles and though many fled the Free Cities of Hudoran as a whole, many more took up arms under Anuletti's banner and stormed Hudorini, frothing at the mouth with vengeance. His terms were simple: sacrifice your first borns to the Pits of Cystra or Hudorini and its people would burn, manse by manse, slave master by slave master.   It took five nights for the men and women in the Sheltered City to relent, to line up their first born children and ship them to Hugo, an isle in the middle of the three large island cities that comprise of Hudoran, where slaves are sent to fight to the death for their freedom.

The Pits of Cystra

The Pits of Cystra is nothing more than an inverted colosseum, where thousands can gather to watch men and women battle each other, wild animals, and creatures of the deep.   Along with nearly a thousand other first borns, Meela was taken to the Pits where she spent the next three years of her life fighting for her life, for her freedom, and the truth that she so desperately needed from her father. Despite the fact that Meela had scarcely handled a weapon before this dastardly fate, there was a part of her, hidden and deep, that reveled in the destruction that could be wrought from her own hands.   Within the first six months of being within the Pits of Cystra, Meela Saragrassi became the Lady of Iron, a formidable opponent against man, woman, or beast. The algae riddled stone did little to stop her golden rampage and everyone who came before her fell-- except one. Alix Wynham, her best friend since the days they were swaddled in silk diapers. She was unable to face him, unable to land a killing blow; and so she threw the match, allowed his rusty dagger to pierce her heart, and smiled through her tears as she struggled to say her final words.   Disappointed, Anuletti had her body thrown into the sea, not knowing that in doing so, insured her rebirth as the next Bearer of the Manta...
