Fire Brand

A Race Made To Serve

Created by Perry, member of the Kesian Worldbuilders, Written and Formatted by Seneschal
When a Dragon host was on the march, there was always one race at the head of it. This race struck fear in the hearts of those who saw the horror of the Dragon armies. Who saw them led countless monsters and men against civilization. Who would sometimes become the very horrors that led these armies. This species was known as the Fire Brand.

The Fire Brand were created as clones of the Dragons, built into a humanoid form by intelligent Dragon alchemists. They were bred and born to serve the chromatic dragons who wished to defend their lands or lead attacks against the mortals who festered in Kesia. For a time, the sight of a fire brand meant that war was on the horizon. War on a draconic scale. They are grown in vats to adulthood, meant to be unempathetic and famililess soldiers, commanders, and governers in times of "peace." Sometimes, they are unlucky men and women of all races, thrown into these vats and turned into these draconic creatures. They were made to be loyal to the dragons who made them but that isn't always the case.

Sometimes, the Fire Brand would break free of their genetic control and gain autonomy. This was common on the eve of battles as war hadn't hammered them into submission yet. With some Fire Brand in hiding and starting families, that genetic inclination to obey has faded more and more over centuries. Soon, the Fire Brand that disobey their masters may outnumber the loyal and controlled Fire Brand. Until that day, Lalas and Atia may be the only places where they can find a chance to live their own lives.

Basic Information

Anatomy

While Fire Brand are bipedal in nature, they share drastic resemblances with their draconic masters. They have scaled hides, more durable than Dragonborns but not as strong as their draconic masters. Additionally, they have wings on their back that allow them to fly.

Growth Rate & Stages

Fire Brand reach adulthood at 1 year of age when they are grown by their Draconic Masters. These don't reach mental maturity until they are 5 years old. However, natural-born Fire Brand reach physical maturity at 15 and mental maturity in their late teens.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Fire Brand are centralized in areas dominated by Dragons. They are only found in Miglia, Lalas, and Atia for the most part. However, some have been known to stray outside these boundaries if they are born naturally or overcome the control of their masters.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Fire Brand, despite being clones, only have enhanced sight and darkvision thanks to their dragon blood. They also have the ability to trance like Elves, meditating for a short amount of time.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

They are honored heroes in Lalas, Atia, and Miglia. They are rare in Miglia since not many have found the secret to perfecting the perfect Fire Brand. However, the Eastern Empires have many dragons that have found out the truth and could produce them at any time when a qualified general was needed.

History

The history of the Fire Brand is almost as storied as the history of Dragons. At first, they were an experiment by an unknown dragon to make their perfect generals to lead armies back when the majority of chromatic dragons still adhered to the beliefs of Tiamat. Alchemical creations made in test tubes and bred to be the ultimate weapon against mortalkind. And for a time, they were. The Age of Binding was filled with raids by the Fire Brand as they laid waste to enemies of the Dragons. Dwarven strongholds were raided and Giants were slaughtered constantly. But that changed when the Kesian Empire came.

The Kesians were the first nation to administer a true bond between Dragons and mortal kind. The Fire Brand, instead of being slaves of the Dragons, were given freewill for a time. When the Age of Dynasties came, the Fire Brand found themselves in a world without any major wars. And that was when it was learned that the Dragons weren't cruel enough (or smart enough) to take away their ability to reproduce. The Fire Brand began to grow as a people though it was in small groups due to not many existing to begin with. In the end, however, those numbers fell drastically just as much as Kesia did.

Evil Fire Brand were once again created and they hunted down their non-evil brethren so none could make use of them against their Draconic masters. At the same time, Dragons learned the secret of turning people into Fire Brand, abeit of a lesser quality than the originals. Both began to spawn as even the Lalasian Empire made used of them. Up to the current day, a large amount of Fire Brand are servants, made to spy on the outside world for their masters or await to be created once more. However, there are some who were able to escape this purge and live on their own. Some travel the world, others settle down. But they must be careful. For the world will never forget. And some of it will never forgive.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The Fire Brand have a negative reputation to any species that lived outside of dragon lands. Anytime they appeared, they were usually under the service of an evil dragon who had learned the secret to crafting them. They were generals in the legions that burned down villages and towns and pillaged cities. For that very reason, they are feared and shunned when they travel through lands.

The notable examples of this belong to the Dwarves and the Giants who were historical enemies of dragons and often went to war with them. Many tell their stories children of the devastation the Fire Brand caused and the great battles it took to take them down. Any chance for them to reconcile will take a long time and lots of alcohol.

To the dragonfolk and people who lived peacefully with Dragons, Fire Brand were heroes to be idolized. They were fervent and loyal generals to the draconic armies and led the expansion of the Kesian and Lalasian Empires many times. When a Fire Brand appears to these people, they know that their land is either under threat or soon about to threaten others.

The Fire Brand

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2 and two ability scores of your choice increase by 1.
Age. A manufactured Fire Brand reaches physical adulthood at age 1, mental maturity at 5 years, and lives up to 100 years before aging rapidly and dying. Natural Fire Brand reach adulthood at 15 years, mental maturity at late teens, and live up to 250 years.
Alignment. Lawful Evil in nature, they never seek fights with other races but see as the Half-Dragons and Dragonborns of Kesia as weaker than them. Serving as Leaders in the Armies of Full Dragons, they often have their own Code they conduct themselves.
On very rare occasions, a Fire-Branded can break its genetic code and turn itself into a good-aligned individual. On even rarer or desperate occasions, Good-Aligned Dragons will create a handful of Fire-Branded Warriors, Clerics and the like to aid them in desperate but Noble Fight.
Sadly, due to their power and abilities; Good-Aligned Fire-Branded are often hunted down by their Evil Kin on the orders of their Draconic Masters.
Size. Your size is Medium.
Darkvision. Thanks to your draconic bloodline, you have better sight in darkness. You can see dim light as bright light out to 60 feet and darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color, only shades of grey.
Trance. When creating the Fire Brand, the dragons decided to take inspiration from the elves somewhat. Despite not having a connection to reincarnation or past lives, they were able to replicate the ability to trance. When a fire brand takes a long rest, they don't need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious for 4 hours a day. After resting in this way, you regain the same benefit a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Draconic Ancestry. Thanks to their connection to Dragons, Fire Brand can draw off the lineage of the dragon that created them. Choose one type of dragon from the table. Your draconic fury and damage resistance is determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.
Draconic Fury. You can use your bonus action to exhale destructive energy, more powerful than a Dragonborn's breath weapon. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation.
When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d8 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases by 1d8 at 3rd level, 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th, and 19th to a max of 11d8 damage. After using Draconic Fury, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
Damage Resistance. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
Winged Demons. Due to their Pure Draconic Heritage, you have a pair of Leathery wings coming from their back. As a result, you gain a flying speed of 40 feet. When encumbered or wearing heavy armor, it is reduced to a flying speed of 30 feet
Warrior Spirit. Since they were bred to be commanders, fire brand have a knack for weapons and armor. You are proficient in medium armor and heavy armor and you can pick four martial weapons to be proficient in.
Draconic Tactics. As a bonus action, a fire brand may call out to one of its allies and allow those within a 30-foot radius the ability to move up to their movement speed and take an attack action. Once you use this ability, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
Draconic Inspiration. The charisma you give up as a fire brand inspires your allies around you. Any ally within 30 feet of you has advantage on Wisdom saving throws against being frightened.
