A Wolf's Last Stand

Written and edited by Perry of the Kesia Worldbuilders.
Thunder cracked and lightning arced across the sky as Staryy slowly scanned the wooded horizon around him. Snow slowly falling around the Ancient Wolf Neko, his ears twitching as the trees creaked and moaned in the windy night.   With the sound of breaking tree limbs, Staryy leaped forward into the snow as the hulking mass of a dragon rushed over the spot he was standing at. Rearing up with its mouth wide, crimson-blue light building in its mouth before its lungs billowed out streaks of its arctic breath. Freezing the ground and air, Staryy found himself caught in the blast. Breaking free quickly from the beast’s ice, Staryy shuddered as he felt parts of his body froze solid as the blast struck him. His hot rage stopping most of the damage from ruining his body, but it could only do but so much as the burning ice clung to his flesh.   Gripping his Stone GreatSword, he looked at the Young Pink Dragon as it sat at the edge of his blurred vision, wisps of icy fire dancing around the great beast’s maul. Seeing it about to recede into the dark forest, Staryy raised his weapon and charged at the Dragon.   Reflexively pulling back from the attack, the Dragon roared in pain as blood spilled from its head, Staryy hitting true on his swing. Swatting at the Barbarian, the Dragon throws the Wolf across the clearing they are in and through a tree.   Pinned under the broken tree, Staryy’s eyes were filled with lights as he tried to rally himself, the crushing weight of the tree draining the life out of him. Lumbering across the clearing to the pinned warrior, it placed its large hand onto the trunk. Looking down at the grey wolf, it’s blue eyes scanned the dazed warrior.   “You are an old man,” it bellowed out with a thick, slither that dripped with draconic dominance. The Dragon’s snoot some inches away from Staryy as he was crushed under the beast’s weight, “I would save you for later, freeze you in my cave to keep for later. Aged and crushed Neko does taste good to me.”   “And Pink Dragon Meat is a delicacy to my people!” Staryy said in his haze.   Growling in anger, the dragon moved to bite down onto the Barbarian's head, revealing rows upon rows of sharp teeth.   Blinking back into reality, Staryy looked into the tooth-filled mouth of the dragon as fear slowly crept into his mind. Letting out a rage-filled roar, Staryy reached up and ripped a tooth out from the Dragon’s front row.   Screaming at the sudden spike of pain, the dragon reared away from the pinned warrior. Seating the moment, Staryy thru the trunk off of him. Colliding with the Dragon, the tree trunk sent the beast away, turning it’s back to Staryy.   Quickly picking himself up, Staryy tried to see if his stone blade was nearby but it wasn’t. Growling as the Ancient Warrior bore his teeth and claws, Staryy rushed the turned Dragon and leaped onto it’s back. Grabbing ahold of its wings, Staryy let out a shout as he tore the wings off the Dragon’s back with his hands.   Roaring in pain, the dragon fell onto it’s back to try and crush the Neko between the ground and it’s back. Falling onto the ice and crashing through the surface of a frozen pond, the two floated apart as both shuddered to the sudden change in temperature.   Holding their breath, the two warriors tried to get out of the freezing water before they both freeze to death. Clamoring to the edge of the ice, Staryy shuddered as his wet head met the cold air. Hanging onto the edge of the ice, Staryy looked up at the Young Pink Dragon standing over him.   Opening his mouth wide, Staryy dove back into the water as a plum of arctic air blasted the surface of the pond. Freezing the pond again, the Pink Dragon looked over the surface as it sniffed and listened for his submerged opponent.   Slowly freezing in the water, Staryy swam under the ice as he banged on the surface. Each spot the Barbarian banged the ice, the Dragon dove to try and grab him. Failing to grab the swimming warrior, the Dragon slowly lost more and more of its energy to the icy water.   Feeling both of their hearts slowly lose energy, both became more frantic to end the other. As more and more holes began to open up in the ice, the dragon became confused about where the warrior was. Slowly moving closer to the Dragon, Staryy broke the ice under his opponent and dropped the great beast into the water.   Wrestling with the beast, Staryy pulled the dragon deeper and deeper into the water. Struggling without its wings, the dragon tried to pry away the Barbarian as its lungs slowly began to fill with water.   Struggling against each other, both began to slow down in the cold water as they both began to freeze. Slashing the Dragon’s neck with his claws, Staryy quickly swam to the surface as his vision began to fade from his eyes. The dragon falling to the bottom of the pond in defeat, its life ended.   Pulling himself onto the shore of the pond, Staryy coughed up the icy pond water as he crawled towards the tree line. Leaning himself up against the broken tree stump, he looked out at the broken ice of the pond as it slowly began to freeze over again. Gripping his sword one last time, his body freezing in place due to the cold.   “Slo Ma’na Drcak…” He whispered with his last breath, speaking Wolfspeak for the last time.   Good Fight Dragon

Author's Notes

Really a simple story I wrote over the course of a couple of evenings. The short story is about Staryy Volk, an Old Wolf Neko Barbarian fighting his final battle against a rare Pink Dragon. The Pink Dragon being a hybrid between a Red and White Dragon.   This story is set shortly after the collapse of the Kesia Empire at the start of the Age of Conquest.
