Wixen

Overview

The Wixen are a magical people that came from the central region of the Bakat territories. They are governed by Heks who lead them in worship of Minabi, Deity of Magic. They have since spread throughout Kerawa. The Wixen started over 4000 years ago, when Heksaro created the first circle dedicated to Minabi. Minabi blessed the circle with powerful magic, the Wixen with longevity, and Heksaro with abundant fertility. That circle is consider an holy area still today, though it is in an area that is inhospitable and hard to reach due to a Mage War that ravaged the are almost 2500 years ago. The first circle was comprised of Heksaro and 12 hedge witches that wanted to have magically powerful children. Those 13 witches carried their children to term, raised them to love and cherish Minabi, and started the 13 families of Wixen that run the Wixen today. The original Wixen Conclave families:

Culture

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Children of the Wixen are birth during a two year handfasting that their parents engage in whilst in their early 20s. The children spend two months with their parents and then are moved into the local creche, where they learn, grow, and play. Their education consists of the basics they need to live in society, plus a foundation in magic.

Coming of Age Rites

By the time each Wixen grows old enough to come of age, they have learned all the fundamental of magic that they will need to begin their journey to become a Master in Wixen Magic. To officially come of age, each Wixen child must perform a feat of magic that shows the have matured enough that they can start learning the journeymen levels of magic. To show this level of magic, each child takes a year or longer to master a piece of magic in the field of their choice that they want to study, that is beyond what they have studied in the creche, but is still within their power range. This shows their willingness to reach beyond the creche to learn from others outside, to study on their own, and to be able to make connection with those older and wiser. Once they have completed their project, it is taken before the local Wixen Conclave, the local Trade Coven, and the local Mages Guild at the Winter's Solstice. If it approved, then one of the Masters from one of either the Conclave, Coven, or Guild will offer the now young adult an apprenticeship that would start after their handfasting is complete. The young adult will have until the Summer Solstice to say goodbye to the children of the creche, find lodging, and prepare for their handfasting.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The most prominent and affluent members of the Wixen are those that have left gender behind and fall in the genderfluid category. Before they turn 50, they run the gamut of genders, depending on what social norm that they want to fit into with the rest of the world. Usually, by the time that a Wixen has turned 50 years old, they have thrown off the ideas of gender, and embraced the ways of Minabi and genderfluidity wholeheartedly. This sets them apart from the rest of the world, but makes them more powerful and blessed in their worship.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship is handled in two parts: Handfasting and Loving Alliance

Handfasting

The Handfasting is handle once a Wixen comes of age, about 25 years of age, but before they are considered the age of maturity, about 50 years of age. The local conclave comes together to pair the young adult to a breeding match. The Handfasting takes place in celebration with all their peers in a group at the summer solstice and lasts for a two years. Each of the pair is given a potion that allows them to become pregnant. One partner takes the potion on their handfasting night, and becomes pregnant. The other partner takes care of the pregnant partner for the 10 months of the pregnancy. After the child is born, the parents spend two months bonding with the child, then the child goes to the creche. For the second year of the handfasting, the second partner becomes pregnant, and the first partner helps. At the end of two years, they have completed the handfasting, and may start their journey to their careers, learning about magic, and finding the members of their Loving Alliance. However, if, at any time, the local Conclave feel like they Wixen need more children, they may call on the young adult to pair up again for another Handfasting. It is their duty to Minabi and the gifts she gave them, to help populate the world with Wixen.

Loving Alliance

Once a Wixen reaches maturity, around age 50, they will have given at least 2 children to the creche, started their journey learning magic, and started paying back into their magical society. At this time, they are allowed to make alliance with other Wixen in love and life. They can formulize relationships that they have started over the years if they feel the need, but it's not required. Some alliance last a lifetime. Some last only a few years. An alliance can be made up of as many partners as one wants, as long as all partners are treated fairly and truthfully. There is no one way to have a Loving Alliance. Some alliances decide to have children of their own. They want the experience of giving birth and knowing that their will be a next generation from them. They petition the local Conclave to receive the potion, and enter into an Alliance Handfasting, where the alliance takes care of the pregnant partner for the year. Since a handfasting is for two years, at least two partners in the Alliance must agree to a pregnancy before the Conclave will distribute the potion.

Relationship Ideals

The best relationships are ones that are based on truth and fair play. Most Wixen are pansexual and polyamorous. They find monogamy and cishet normality weird and unappealing. It goes with their sense of gender fluidity. If they can't see themselves as any one single gender, why would they only be attracted to one gender. And if they are attracted to more than one gender, how could one person fulfill every aspect of their nature. Their fluid natures wouldn't allow it. Wixen love fiercely and with their long lives (sometime up to 500 years), they can love as long as they live. There are relationships that start as friendships in the creche, petition to Handfast with the local Conclave, and enter into a Loving Alliance until their deaths. They spend their lives together with laughter, love, and multiple partners.
