Tebinstot's Staff

"This is my body."

History

While Tebinstot-Fero was walking through the woods near Lake Paho, he came upon the remains of the largest known sequoia tree. He presumed this massive stump to be dead, but when he approached, the stump lifted one of its roots out of the ground and offered Tebinstot a piece of itself, saying, "This is my body. I have much to teach you."   This large stick allowed Tebinstot to easily commune with the Sequoia Stump , and he did so with abandonment, eventually founding the Rooters. To teach new bumers how to communicate with the tree roots he often lent them this staff as an aid. Once his students were capable of reaching out to the Stump on their own, he shared this staff with the next student.   When Tebinstot died of old age, he passed the staff on to Bera-Bolt, marking her as the new Rooter Master. The staff still remains in her care, and will be passed on in her death in continuation of this tradition.

Ritual

The staff is held by the current Rooter Master during new season rituals, symbolically marking them as the leader and helping them connect to the Stump. As precedented by Tebinstot, the staff is still also used to train new initiates.

Appearance and Care

The staff is quite large, upwards of ten feet, though in the hands of Tebinstot it looked too small, reaching half his height. It has a driftwood like appearance and is quite smooth.   The staff is prevented from getting moist by hiding it deep inside a crevice of the old Stump when it rains. Sequoia's are quite rot-resistant, but best not to take any chances.   The staff remains in the position of the current rooter master at all times.

Great picture choice!   I do love the origin story of the staff, and the fact they protect it from the rain because they don't want it to rot.
