The King's Ridge Dam
The King's Ridge Dam
A Dam in general is a barrier that stops or restricts the flow of water from rivers or underground streams.A Reservoir (Lake) is created by the Dam to hold back the water flow and redirect it to be used for Irrigation,Human Consumption or Industrial use.A dam can also be used to collect water or for storage of water which can be evenly distributed between locations.Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water, while other structures such as floodgates are used to manage or prevent water flow into specific land regions. The King's Ridge Dam was built to hold the water needed for The City of Dun Gondalin, which used the Aqueduct to direct the flow of the river from its Mountain source.
Dwarven Engineering
Dwarven Dam construction was characterized by "the Dwarves' ability to plan and organize engineering construction on a grand scale."Dwarven planners introduced the concept of large reservoir dams which could secure a permanent water supply for urban settlements over the dry season.Their pioneering use of water-proof mortar and particularly Dwarven concrete allowed for much larger structures. The highest Dwarven Dam is The King's Ridge Dam near Dun Gondalin,in The Dragonsteeth Mountains which was the first Dam ever built. It's record height of 100 m (320 ft) remains unsurpassed still today.
Dwarven engineers invented standard designs like Embankment Dams and Masonry Gravity Dams, they displayed such a high degree of inventiveness,They introduced Arch Dams,Buttress Dams and Multiple-Arch Buttress Dams. The Dwarven workforces also were the first to build Dam bridges.
