Sandsurf Village
Sandsurf Village is a settlement in Skortch characterized by its simple architecture, transportation services, and an overwhelming population of bulettes
Demographics
The Sandsurfers are composed primarily of Sand Elves, with a few Half-Sand Elves and some Skortch Humans in the mix. Other residents of varying races are not unheard of, but the culture typically clashed with them.
The wealth disparity is mostly nonexistent; from a young age, Sandsurfers all bond with a bulette and learn to work with them to provide a variety of services for passersby as well as nearby settlements. The Chieftain of the village serves only to provide a final say in difficult matters, but is not compensated for their position.
Industry & Trade
Most Sandsurfers use their bulettes to provide travelers and merchants with transportation, but they also offer a variety of other niche services. These services include digging graves, moats, trenches, and irrigation channels, herding livestock, and protecting homes and camps.
The village does not export many goods, and instead relies on their services to receive the supplies they need.
History
The Sandsurfers began as a nomadic people. No one can say when they developed their kinship with the Sand Sharks of Skortch, but as the world grew more sedentary, the Sandsurfers had no need to roam the continent anymore. The bulettes are said to have guided the Sandsurfers to their current location in a phenomenon known as the "Settling of the Sharks." While there was a distinct lack of tillable soil, the bulettes discovered deep springs of fresh water for their riders, and a symbiotic trade relationship was then developed between them and nearby settlements.
Over time, the bulettes would help the continent to widen and irrigate the fresh water sources and provide a more sustainable lifestyle for many cities. As a result, the Sandsurfers are generally well-respected. Furthermore, their self-made and diligent attitudes as well as their affinity to nature earn the village a revered reputation.
Architecture
The Sandsurfers generally live in small, self-contained mud huts fashioned from a sandstone and dirt mixture. Some of these hovels delve deep into the earth, thanks to the bulettes' natural ability to tunnel. These tunnels are vital in providing necessarily cool dwellings when hot, dry summers come around.
The Sandsurfers are not so materialistic, but they do hold a sense of spirituality. Many homes can be found adorned with carvings or symbols resembling the sand sharks.
Geography
Sandsurf Village is surrounding mostly by the barren desert, with a distinct canyon of jagged rocks notably sticking out to the northwest. It is not regarded as an aesthetically pleasing location, but the humble villagers will never complain about what they have been given.
Natural Resources
Bulettes have been instrumental in procuring salt from the nearby canyons to help the villagers preserve their food. However, the salt is found in such a scarce amount that the villagers do not trade it with nearby settlements, instead honoring the resource as sacred and vital to their lives.
