Account of the Taking of a River Defense near Noveskan-Ithilien Border
Purpose
An Ithilien officer recounting the day's events
Historical Details
Background
The officer writing this journal entry is on the front lines of a campaign into Noveskan territory. The king of Ithilien launched the campaign completely unprovoked and with no warning against a nation he was supposed to be at least loosely allied with. The easy march the officer speaks of is because Noveskan forces were taken totally off guard by the attack and were, as of the writing of this journal entry, scrambling to muster forces to retaliate.

Another day. Another successful push. Notheskan troops tried to hold us at the river. They had erected hasty defenses, mostly what they could carry from their garrison on short notice and what they could take from the nearby town where I write this recollection. They were completely unprepared for the strength of the force we brought against them, though. The skirmish could not have taken half an hour. I will record the details in my report, but I am happy to say we took no casualties.
The Notheskans were not so lucky. We are under orders to leave no survivors, but I intervened before the men could execute the half dozen who surrendered. There will be plenty of bloodshed to come in this war. I see no need to contribute to that tide more than necessary. I had the men dismantle the simple defenses and build a makeshift prison in town, where the surviving soldiers now reside, bound.
The men are pleased with our progress. Their morale is high and they almost seem loathe to rest for the night, so eager are they to continue our seemingly unstoppable march. I hear them now, singing praises to the Moroïs, but I cannot bring myself to join them. The Pale Lady may have blessed us this far, but I know it is only because Mitna blinded our self-made enemy from our approach. Soon, though, Winter's Mother will turn on us, as she must. I only hope that she will take after her sister when the time comes and have mercy on us.
