Welcome To Kaleera
Why am I Here?
I discovered World Anvil through a How to be a Great GM video (I forget which one), and decided to try it out. Kaleera is the result of it: as my first world, I wanted to flex my creative muscles and make something I could be proud of. I may make some stories set in the world at some point in the future on my DeviantArt page, but right now, I want to focus on laying the scene. While I don't mind taking inspiration, I want it to be something that overall has its own unique look to it and can be appreciated based on its own merits. This may even help me to improve as a writer as well. Being in high-school, I'm not exactly a professional, so any and all constructive criticism is encouraged, especially because I'm already starting to hit roadblocks and back myself into corners. What is Kaleera?
Kaleera, as I have envisioned, is a low-magic fantasy world set, technologically, between the 6th-8th centuries (that may be subject to change, but I don't plan on advancing technology past the 11th century). As a result, mail is the common armor of the royalty, with some using early lamellar type armors. Magic exists but is not very well understood and is often regarded as a destructive force of chaos. It is generally seen as random and inconsistent, so naturally, it's hard to study, but still, there are those who devote their lives to such fields. The only major magical event in my world (so far) is known to many as the Crumbling (or many other names I've yet to decide): long story short, its where the tectonic plates suddenly move at rapid speed, causing major change and destruction. Naturally, this event is feared and hallowed as the end of an era and beginning of a new one, but at this point in history, one has not happened for some time, so there is somewhat of a coherent history. Many people have faith in higher powers, with many a religious conflict taking place throughout history. Many gods' and spirits' names are invoked and many place their hope and salvation on them. However, while these gods are numerous and hold weight among the people, they themselves are not actually present in the happenings of the world. Or maybe they are. How much is their doing and does free will even exist? These are questions I do not plan on answering: I want the status of their existence to be ambiguous and up for interpretation.
Kaleera is a diverse world of many cultures. The people are diverse in their beliefs as well as who is in power or not. However, these are not entirely fluid: people are likely to look after their own and many warriors are between various ethnic groups. However, the line of good and evil are muddy and vary in their shades of grey. While many can be described as evil or good, many will acknowledge them as the other.
Noticing a theme here? There's meant to be a lot of ambiguity, mystery, and interpretation involved. Hopefully, that is one of the things that makes the world more unique and attractive to those who enjoy fantasy. If there is something that mirrors the real world or something else, that's most likely because I took inspiration from it (like how the Remaen Imperium is totally absolutely not the Roman Empire...not at all...). Like I said though, I'm not a professional at this stuff so I still need work making them unique and not just "the Briane, they're my Not-Anglo-Saxons!" As mentioned earlier, I want constructive criticism so I can improve: I would love advice and ideas to bounce of off :)

I like how you're letting your inspiration take you wherever you want to go and create what you want to create. Don't worry about not-Romans and not-Anglo-Saxons coming across as derivative. You'll find your own creative touch if you let yourself build it all out. I'm drawn to your comments about sticking to 6th-8th century technology. Are their cultures in your world of varying technological levels?
Thanks. I’m sure I will, it’s just taking longer than expected. I’m trying to work on a lot of all at once. Yes there are. Some cultures are still limited to flint or bronze. Some use iron, but don’t have good access to steel.
