Artaelus of Sardinae
Grand Master Magician Artaeliulaeus Markusaeus Atalaintaeus (a.k.a. Father of the Modern Arcane Arts)
The world is too focused on what is and what has been, as opposed to what will be. Too often you see that the common folk are looking for the highest quality shit for their fields or the landlords collect their late dues, while the nobles argue tirelessly about the state of their kingdoms and "Who's father did this" and "Who's ancestor did that." If these petty fools realized the true potential of the arcane arts and set their minds to its mastery, not only would this world of ours be more advanced, but also less chaoticMagic is a force that frightens many people, for they do not understand it: likewise, it is difficult to learn the art, as it not only is hard to understand from an outside standpoint but even those who practice it have difficulty with its mysteries. Some manage to get a handle on only the basics, while others manage to gain a decent grasp of it, and fewer still manage to achieve what most would call a mastery of the mystic arts. Then there is Artaelus of Sardinae, who has such a mastery of the arcane, that he seemed he could have been divine. He is called by many within the field of magic study as the Founder of Modern Magic: for good reason too, as many of his principles, research, and methods are still used to this day.
Physical Description
Body Features
While most people of Remaen descent have a characteristic tan, Artaelus was known for being quite pale: he was still clearly Remaen, he just looked like he had not spent much time in the sun. This was because he hadn't: much of his life was spent in his home, with his studies and experiments. Artaelus was also said to have had a thin frame.

Personal history
Artaelus was the middle child of a wealthy noble family, with two brothers and a sister. His eldest brother enlisted in the army and eventually lead several military campaigns into Korgosht, while his sister was married off to a noble, and his younger brother joined the clergy. It was his family that gave Artaelus his famous cynicism towards the state of civilization; his parents often dealt with nobles, of which most of their interactions consisted of bickering and bragging of their family's noble line; his elder brother died on the front line, having achieved nothing and the borders remaining the same as they had been before the campaigns; his sister would commit suicide after falling ill while pregnant, resulting in a miscarriage; his younger brother became a fanatic and began pushing his family away from him for his extremist practices, and died unchronicled by the clergy for the same reason. By the age of ten, Artaelus had lost all interest in any matters of nobility and military or religious occupations were out of the question.
Fortunately, Artaelus had shown a gift for the mystic arts long before that time: according to the records, he began to show an interest in magic at the age of six, often asking his parents for money to purchase literature and materials for his studies and would successfully harnassing magic the following year. It was then that his parents began personally began funding his studies, purchasing the necessary resources and hiring many Mages to tutor him. However, Artaelus's skills with magic soon became so great, the mages began to seek him out and any students he shared a teacher with, he quickly outpaced. At the age of eleven, he was being tutored by some of the greatest mages on Kadagard and had even traveled to Alpen with some of them to study Aakaveid techniques. By the age of thirteen, Artaelus's knowledge was so advanced, he soon began to develop his own theories on Magic and experiment with them, on his own and with the help of his former teachers, now colleagues.
Mental Trauma
Artaelus had a very tragic youth, having lost nearly everyone he was close to. While not someone who suffered from mental illness, the loss of his siblings contributed heavily to his famous cynicism.

Quotes & Catchphrases
Kings, warlords, soldiers, priests, nobles, they're all the same: too small-minded to set their focuses on the advancement of the arcane arts, rather than their own petty ambitions or baseless ideologies. Priests, in particular, are some of the greatest fools on the planet, that they honestly believe their gods will help them now when they have yet to even show themselves since the world was born if that was even their doing at all.
People of low mental capabilities look at magic and see a force of destruction; the tiny-minded conquerors look at it and see a weapon; I see the next step in the advancement of civilization. People, however, refuse to acknowledge what we already know, for they are either too imbecilic to realize it, or are too cowardly to accept it.
