Moldavite Crystals

"The crystals are bright blue and translucent. The interior of the crystal appears to shift as I move it from side to side. Possibly my imagination or possibly some curiosity pertaining to the crystal's inner structure. Dr.'s Brigg and Velscotch have both noticed a burning sensation when the crystals touch bare skin, if that's the case then it would match the Arcanologist's description of high magic exposure. Further examination and tests are needed to come to any conclusive description of these crystals,"   from the field notes of geologist Dr. Wilhelm Bast

Properties

Material Characteristics

Moldavite crystals share many properties with basic quartz crystals, such as hardness and crystal habit. They only differ in color and rarity.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The structure of Moldavite crystals works well as a trap for magic energy, giving the crystals their blue glow. Because of this, miners must be careful not to touch the crystals directly or else risk severe burns from escaping magic. Upon closer examination of a depleted Moldavite crystal, it appeared to be a polymorph of quartz, meaning that it is still made of Silica and Oxygen, but it has crystallized with a different structure.

Geology & Geography

Moldavite crystals are mined out of mountain formations, such as the Koldovack Mountains dividing the Selvestine Empire from Sinsin, and also in The Living Peaks of East Glade

Origin & Source

Moldavite crystals are mostly found in the metamorphic rocks that make up mountain

Life & Expiration

Once exposed to the elements, Moldavite crystals will continuously take in and give off magic energy. However; the rate at which they give off the energy is quicker and will deplete a freshly exposed crystal in about 6-7 days

History & Usage

Discovery

A team of Imperial surveyors were mapping the Koldovack Mountains in the year 565 of the First Age. While exploring natural caves that formed within the mountains they stumbled across veins of glowing crystals; though the value of these crystals would not be found until 30 years after their discovery.

Everyday use

Moldavite crystals are used as a power source usually. The M33 Pulse Rifle is a weapon developed by the Heartland Empire to use the radiating magic of moldavite crystals as ammunition

Cultural Significance and Usage

Modern societies in Kalder are powered by the magic energy collected from moldavite crystals. This has led to them being associated with wealth and power. Those who own the Moldavite crystals have high influence in society, especially in the Selvestine Empire.

Industrial Use

Moldavite Power Pylons are the main power source for the developed cities of Kalder. They usually make up the heart of any settlement or district.

Refinement

Large Moldavite crystals and those used in weapons are refined so as to fit within their casings. Moldavite dust or small crystals are melted down and poured into a mold. Once the mold is filled, it is immediately subjected to the conditions needed to create Moldavite crystals. The end product is a grown crystal ready for industrial or military use

Hazards

Those who harvest and work with Moldavite crystals know the dangers that accompany these beautiful stones. If the crystals touch bare skin they will cause burns.

Environmental Impact

These crystals play a big role in what Arcanologists call the Magic Flow Cycle. Magic is pulled from the surrounding air into the crystal, held, and eventually released. Since society figured out how to harness this captured energy there have been fears that it will significantly harm the Cycle since magic is used up to create power and not returned to the Cycle.

Reusability & Recycling

Moldavite crystals will, with some assistance, gather enough magic energy to recharge. This process is usually proliferated by an Industrial Chaotic, or a Chaotic Trooper in the Military's case.

Distribution

Trade & Market

His Imperial Majesty has claimed all Moldavite crystals and mines as property of the state. Outside of the Empire, Moldavite is not used due to lack of knowledge and stigma given its dangerous nature

Storage

Moldavite crystals are stored in sealed containers to keep them from losing any of their captured magic energy

Law & Regulation

The rule in the Empire is that no one but the state can produce industrial and military grade Moldavite. Elsewhere in Kalder, the Moldavite trade is low since the Empire is the only nation to unlock its potential, and His Majesty does not share this information with any other nation.
