Astar Ink Item in Kal'shar | World Anvil

Astar Ink

Astar Ink is a type of enchanted ink used primarily by Kalka'shar nobility.

Uses and Effects

Astar Ink is used by nobility to project their mental image onto parchment. The ink is enchanted to be attuned to a specific user's magic signature and so is extremely rare and difficult to procure, attained only through adept enchanters. Because of this it is usually only used in official capacities, by scribes who are hired to capture historical moments and by witnesses to high treason as evidence -- though some notable artists have been known to make use of it to project their imaginations to the page.

Side Effects

Though little evidence exists, there are spoken accounts of prolonged use leading to two main side-effects: the uncontrollable flood of vivid memories that can render a person paralysed and sometimes psychologically scarred, and the loss of memories related to what the ink was used for. This only serves to add to the ink's miimal use within Kalka'shar society.

Manufacturing process

Astar Ink is specifically created for its purpose and presented to a master enchanter, who will spend some time with the person it is intended for; to get a feeling for their specific magic signature. The enchanter will then sit with the ink and focus their magic with the signature of the client, performing a complex spell to intertwine the two and cast their intent into the ink.

Raw materials & Components
Astar Ink is made by grinding charcoal with the juice of the Astar Flower -- a sacred flower whose stem contains large amounts of runny liquid which gives the ink its rich, dark colour. The flower specifically is considered to only grow in places of great calamity, and so is used for this ink due to the belief that the liquid it holds contains the power of the great historical events it grows around. This is how it and the ink got its name -- Astar, meaning 'witness'.
