The Shattering
While this conflict is known as The Shattering, this name technically only applies to the ending when the Spellblade was shattered by Aviën. But since almost all knowledge about both the Shattering of the Spellblade itself and the events that led to that moment have been lost, the whole conflict is now known under that name.
History
Prelude
With the ever increasing hunger for power, the mages across Kaigan and the neighbouring continents kept experimenting to find the limits of what magic could bring them. This increased the tensions both within their rivalries and between them and the rest of the populous as they demanded more and more resources and manpower to produce results of their experiments.
Many of the experiments failed causing all kinds of scars to the land and dangerous situation that caused numerous casualties all over the place. Eventually it became clear that there was indeed a limit to magic, namely that enforced on them by the deities and their divine power, but instead of letting this barrier stop them, various mages actively sought out methods to deal with the divine beings, causing the wrath of the deities to be brought down upon the material plane.
War
A large scale war broke out between the deities and their divine forces and the mages, who had found many ways to either create or summon their own armies, with the rest of society caught in between. Battles were fought all across the various continents, both forces destroying the land of innocent people in the wake of their power struggle. Both sides recruited normal people to fight for their cause while others found this chaos a good cover to raid and destroy settlements for their own sake.
Uprising
As the war went on, Aviën got more and more visions about a future that couldn’t be restored, about the complete destruction of the material plane. He sought for ways to change the future, but he found only one and while that one solution would cause less destruction then letting the war play out, it still required the destruction of almost all that was currently alive, including his own pantheon of deities.
Seeing no other way, Aviën went on with the plan, creating the Spellblade and sending it out into the world. The vision, as described in the The Zenith Revelation, was sent to all of civilization, causing an uprising among men against both mages and deities alike. In the end the prophecy was fulfilled by a group of six heroes.
Shattering
After both sides were destroyed, the group of six went to Aviën himself under the impression that he too needed to be destroyed. Aviën smiled as his plan had come to fruition and the six had succeeded their mission. For the final step in his plan, Aviën shattered the blade, sending a wave of powerful energy across the material plane, dealing with the remnants that were left of the previous civilization.
Aftermath
After the shattering of the Spellblade, almost everything of the material plane was in ruins. Only a handful of people had survived the whole ordeal, now left to rebuild society from the ground up and dealing with all the destruction left behind. To this day there are still remnants and ruins from a pre-Shattering civilization that can be uncovered, giving researchers a glimpse of what once had been.

This certainly sounds like a destructive war! I find wars that lead to the destruction of life as people know it both fascinating and terrifying. :O
Yeah they definitely are. Thanks for the comment :)
