The Order of Souls

Caring for the death is a vital part of life in Kaigan as otherwise foul magic such as necromancy or possession could take hold of the death, wreaking havoc in cities. The Order of Souls deals with the death, both collecting and purifying them before their journey to the afterlife.

Worship

The Order of Souls is named after the deity they worship, namely Aviën, the God of Souls. And while this is the deity of both life and death, the Order of Souls mainly works in the grave domain. The worship of people following the Order of Souls is most of the time fairly minimal as most of them see their worship through practical means, not through elaborate practise.   The main practices of the Order of Souls consists of blessing new born children and recently deceased people, giving their soul to the Aviën, and allowing him to watch over them in both life and death. Besides that, it is seen as good practise to provide healing and aid to those in need, and those unable to get the help themselves such as the poor and misfortunate.

Temples

The Order of Souls can always be found in the Temple of Souls, which is located in every major city. Outside of major cities this order often resides near graveyards or other places that collect the death, having a smaller place to themselves, besides the place that the God of Souls has in the communal temple.

Playing a character devoted to the God of Souls

When playing a cleric or paladin from the Order of Souls, this are some important aspects to keep in mind.

Domains

Aviën, has influence in three domains. These are the domain of Life, Grave and Death. Both Life and Grave can be freely picked, but the Death domain is generally not allowed for player characters as necromancy is prohibited and heavily frowned upon in Kaigan.

Appearance

Characters from the Order of Souls are always clothed in something black, many of the workers of the temples will wear all black, but traveling clerics often choose to wear only partial black clothes.

Devotion

When playing a character devoted to Aviën, the God of Souls, it is important to consider their view on life and death, this also depends on the chosen domain. Most people who follow the Order of Souls view both life and death as a natural part of life, blessing both. They also know that it is not their opinion that matters when judging the life of another. Ultimately Aviën will decide when something needs to be born or die. They choose to only kill something or someone out of necessity of either survival or defence, blessing the deceased soul for Aviën, and view the punishment of individuals or groups out of their control, making them neutral.
