That sickly, nausious feeling you get in your stomach the first day after setting sail, that's the best feeling!— Evanra Hoshin
Evanra Hoshin is one of the most important explorers during the forty-fourth century. Based in Rasi she was the first person to map out a lot of islands in the Southern Ocean and brought a lot of attention to possible trade routes
Personality
Her determination is one of her most well known attributes. When she wants something, she will fight until she made it, which also marks an almost unhealthy amount of stubbornness. Luckily she has learned over the years when she needs to settle for a compromise and look at a longer term accomplishment of her goal. Another important trait is her leadership capabilities which she has displayed since she was a kid.
Evanra has a healthy wanderlust and need for adventure to satisfy her personal curiosity, which makes her an exelent explorer. But this drive can also be difficult to convey to others or exept that some thing might be difficult. It takes Evanra a while to open up to people and she tends to keep most of her problems or conserns for herself.
History
Birth
Evanra was born in a small fishers village west of Rasi to a human couple. By that time summer was well on its way and most of the people of Teranto were too busy to notice the birth. Her birth was relatively easy as her mother, Mía, had already given birth to Lucos, her older brother by two years, besides that Evanra was small. At the time of birth, her father, Diégor, was working on one of the fishing vessels and it wasn't until the evening that he actually knew that his baby daughter had been born that afternoon.
Childhood
During most of her childhood, Evanra was free to go and explore Teranto. Together with Lucosh and other children from the village they played around in the village and near the beach. Evanra was always one of the leading figures in her friend groups, even when she was playing with her older brother and his friends she would be the one to make decisions. This characteristic would suit her well in her career later on in life. In Teranto it was common for all children to learn how to swim and how to work on a boat. When Evanra was about ten, her dad took her on her first full day of fishing and while she felt sick all day the feeling of sailing over the ocean waves left her with the desire to see where it could take her.
After many years of sailing with her father and helping out around the docks, Evanra longed for something bigger. She wanted to explore beyond the horizon, but her mother had a different idea. On her sixteenth birthday her mother told Evanra that she was to be married off to one of the older boys in Teranto. Crying she told her brother, as she knew she could trust him, and together they hatched a plan. The following day the adventure started as both set off towards Rasi in spite of the wishes of their parents.
Career
It didn't take long before Lucos found a job as a dockworker, but for Evanra it was a different story. While Teranto was quite open to people working in the fishing industry, the people in Rasi did not share this view and it took Evanra a lot of convincing before someone whould let her join the crew. Eventually the captain of the Jumping Kelpie took her on board and made her work as a cooking assistant. It was not what Evanra had expected of her big city dreams, but she understood that this was her only chance.
The Jumping Kelpie was a small trading vessel that travelled along the coast to various coastal towns. The route was neither very dangerous nor very interesting, but everything was better than the fishing vessels in Teranto. During her first trip it became clear very quickly that Evanra didn't have much talent for cooking, most of the time she had snuck out of the kitchen to be on the deck and help out with various other jobs until the cook called her back in. Captain Jeoff, who was captain at the time of the Jumping Kelpie, was very amused by her presence among his crewmates and noticed quickly how useless she was as a cooking assistant. Halfway through the first trip he changed her position to a deckhand, which suited Evanra much better.
For many years to come she sailed with the Jumping Kelpie and slowly climbed the ranks until she became first mate. While she liked her years at the trading vessel, it also started to feel very much the same during most trips. Evanra jumped around various ships afterwards, with the experience as a first mate it was easier to join crews, but she never felt the same excitement as she had done at the fishing vessels in Teranto or during her first years on the Jumping Kelpie. Feeling down, she reconnected with Lucos. As both had spent many years on the sea they had lost contact, but it didn't take long for them to get back to what it used to be. Sharing stories about their travels, Lucos mentioned the recent opportunity to aquire a ship. Evanra immediately jumped onto that idea and proposed instead of doing trade runs, they would try to explore more of the Southern Ocean. While Lucos first felt apprehensive, Evanra knew how she could convince Lucos and eventually they settled on doing one run and go back to trading if they didn't find anything.
Finding a crew took more time than expected as many people didn't like the idea of exploring the unknown, but with a lot of contacts among various ship they gathered a small crew. With the acquisition of the crew and the ship, their adventures could begin. With Lucos as captain and Evanra as first mate the Sea Drake set sail to the south. Evanra had been right and their first run was quite successful as they found an archipelago after only two weeks on the sea. Because of the success many more expeditions were set out by the Sea Drake. While Evanra loved the sense of adventure, Lucos only participated in the first few expeditions after which he handed his captains hat to Evanra.
For years Evanra sailed as captain of the Sea Drake and explored all islands she could find in the Southern Ocean. With her maps the trade of various materials found on these islands began. Her presence became a staple in the docks of Rasi and reputation spread wide as she became known as the Rasi Drake for her abilities and guts after surviving many expeditions into unknown territory. Besides mapping out much of the Southern Ocean, Evanra also helped promote the abilities of women in the sailing scene of Rasi.
Retirement
As one of the most well known captains in Rasi, many of the others in the docks listened to her. After her sailing career came to a well deserved end, Evanra took up a post as harbourmaster for a couple of years. During this time, she ran the Rasi docks as she ran her ship with a firm grip and a lot of guts. Eventually she settles in a relatively small house with an ocean view in Rasi where she spent her last years writing about her expeditions before passing peacefully in her sleep.
I loved reading her backstory. She had a lot of hurdles to overcome, but she overcame them all! :) I am so pleased her older brother rescued her from an unwanted arranged marriage and she got to live her dreams. The part about her starting as a cooking assistant was amusing, particularly as she was terrible at it! :D
Thank you for the comments, they are always so lovely to read and make my day :)
