Ephraim ben Ira Margolis Character in The Works of Johannes T. Evans | World Anvil

Ephraim ben Ira Margolis

Ephraim Fell in a heavy Polish winter in 1322, where he landed directly into an extremely heavy snow drift. He was there for three days and nights before being found by Rabbi Ira ben Moyshe Elijah, whereafter he was pulled to safety.   Ephraim became a pathologist and medical practictioner and dedicated himself to caring for the sick throughout the years of the Black Death, to which he was immune. As the years went on, he continued to devote himself to medical service, particularly to the healthcare of other Jews in his community, and was regularly a member of travelling caravans throughout Eastern Europe and, later, Southern Europe.   In the early 1800s, following increasing emancipations for Jewish people in England, Ephraim came west and lived for a time in Birmingham before settling in Bristol, where he joined the Caer Afon Magical Hospital as a medical practitioner.   Doctor Margolis is now lead clinician of the Caer Afon Obstetrics and Antenatal Care Unit , where he works typically with other obstetricians and midwives.   A tall, broad man with warm, pale brown skin, freckles and sunspots scattered over his cheeks and brow, Margolis' eyes are honey-coloured, and he has a loud, booming voice. He gesticulates widely with strong hands, and is incapable of speaking without moving them widely. He is balding on top, and the hair that remains to him is thick grey and black, with a thick-growing cropped beard. He laughs easily and frequently, and his smile shows in the whole of his face, especially in the crinkle of his eyes and brow.

History

Ephraim met Jean-Pierre while Jean-Pierre was completing his initial medical training in the 1730s, and supported him somewhat after the death of his lover, Jules, in the 1760s and 70s. Despite Jean-Pierre's action in recent years, Ephraim tends to see the good in everybody, and maintains to all would-be critics that for all his extracurricular activities, Jean-Pierre Delacroix is one of the best surgeons he can name.

History

Ephraim was good friends with Dufresne's father, as the two of them were both doctors, and although Tholo himself didn't become a doctor, Ephraim always bought any books in which his plates appeared, and would frequently not only write letters to him praising his work, but place books to which Dufresne had contributed on prominent display in his office, where he would recommend them to patients.   Even in his office at the Caer Afon hospital in the 21st century, Ephraim has several of Tholo Dufresne's plates printed and framed on display, and remembers him very fondly.
