Eiro
Soon to be King
This is the title given to the Calief who is next in line to be king. While traditionally conferred through lineage, it is not required to be of royal blood. The king decides who he believes to be the best fit for the future of the kingdom.
The Eiro [originally spelled "Aero"] helps the king by listening to the complaints and worries of the people. He then delegates tasks to those who can complete them. Sometimes, he has to pass the information to the king, who then decides what needs to be done and who can do it.
The title has been around for as long as anyone can remember. It is said that as long as there has been a King, there has also been an Eiro. Quite often, however, there is no eiro because the prince is not yet old enough. A less common instance is when the king has no heir and no hope for one. A notable example is the last Aurian.
Once the king has passed, the eiro becomes the new king. If there is no declared eiro, then the firstborn of the king is called to the throne. If there is no firstborn, the throne moves to the next closest relative, and so on. If the bloodline is ended, a new king is chosen through a democratic process and voted on by the people. This is known to have happened only once, with the first Ashen.
The eiro is referred to as male, but it can be granted to a female. In this case, she becomes a queen and her husband becomes the king. The king and queen work together with equal power, but whoever was the eiro is the spokesperson and the figurehead of the people. Because of this dual leadership, another duty of the eiro is to find a spouse. Only through a mother and father relationship can the kingdom reach its full potential.
