The Akim

Geography

The Akim is a vast desert that is subject to oppressive heat in the day and near freezing temperatures at night. The Akim is over a million square miles of empty, inhospitable desert. It is believed that the Akim was once an equally vast warm grassland with large forests and rivers. Ever since the end of the Old World period and the First Coming of the End Times the Akim under went a rapid period of desertification, turning it into the vast wasteland it is today.

Ecosystem

Little survives out in the Akim aside from nomad groups and transient tribes. The only plant life that can sustain itself in the Akim are plants well suited for hot, dry conditions such as solitary trees with extremely deep roots or cacti. The few animals that live out in the Akim tend to burrow during the height of the day to avoid the heat and during the deep nighttime to avoid the cold.

Localized Phenomena

Periodically the region will endure a volcanic winter along with much of the rest of the world due to the eruption of Talon Spire, which spews an enormous amount of volcanic ash into the sky, causing the sun to be obscured, or even entirely blocked for decades at a time. The last time this phenomenon occured was in 213 BBA, and has occurred with some regularity once every 500 to 1000 years since the First Coming of the End Times.

History

The Akim was home to the sprawling and prosperous Mossix Empire during the Old World period. As the Mossix Empire collapsed, so did the ecosystem of the Akim from a lush land of grassy rolling hills and forests to a sandy waste, devoid of life. In the recent past the Akim has become home to transient tribes and nomad groups called the Alrasham. Two major civilizations exist at the northeast and southwest edges of the Akim, The Rassayad Sultanante and The Babavid Sultanate.
