Astral Ray

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Astral Ray is an enormous being native to The Akim and The Sea of Sparks. The largest ever recorded Astral Ray is estimated to have had a wingspan that was over 50 feet long. The Astral Ray looks like an enormous wing or diamond shape with a long thin tail trailing after it, similar to waterborne Rays. The Astral Ray has a brilliant sky blue underside that renders it nearly invisible against the daytime sky when observed from underneath, despite its size. The top of the Astral Ray is a brilliant moving and shifting purple haze, from which the creature gets its name. It is widely believed that the brilliant shifting colors help the rays remain camouflaged in their second home, the Sea of Sparks. The few documented encounters with Astral Rays indicate that they are docile, aloof creatures when in contact with comparatively tiny Mortals.

Dietary Needs and Habits

It is unknown what the Astral Ray eats but it is believed that it eats some sort of small creature in the Sea of Sparks, as there are no recorded instances of a Ray eating anything in the Akim. The Astral Ray is more than large enough to feed on Mortals but does not, leading to speculation that the Ray is herbivorous, or possibly omnivorous but preferring very small, possibly insect like creatures native to the Sea of Sparks.

Biological Cycle

The Astral Ray moves between Jeharr and the Sea of Sparks to seek food and is the only species of creature known to do this so regularly. The Astral Ray is a rare sighting however, and the length of time that it spends in each plane is estimated to be anywhere from days to weeks. It is believed that the Rays live in the Akim to avoid the dangers of the Sea of Sparks in favor of the vast emptiness of the desert. Astral Rays are typically solitary, nomadic creatures but will stay in one place in the desert in order to lay and protect eggs during the hottest times of the year on Jeharr. Typically this nesting period will take 5-6 weeks, after which the hatchlings will take off with the parent.
