Whims of Destiny Spell in Ithekshem | World Anvil

Whims of Destiny

I don't trust any destiny I can't change - good thing there's a spell for that!
Whims of Destiny is an Astral spell of Moderate power that allows the wizard to inscribe a specific condition or outcome they desire to come true upon the fabric of the world. For a year and a day, the forces of fate will work subtly to make that desire come true, though there are limits to its reach. Broad statements are more likely to fail, and unrealistic ones will never work, much to the chagrin of lonely wizards everywhere.   An object of fate must be used to cast the spell or seven manifestations of Astral Magic. There are lost in some unlikely fashion upon the completion of the spell, no matter how safely secured.

Effect

Whims of Destiny is a subtle spell with far-reaching but often mild effects. I wish to acquire or I wish to be unharmed are possible workings of the spell, both of which will end the magic as soon as either condition has come true. In the first case, the wizard may stumble upon the object of their desire in some shop that just happened to acquire it from a passing treasure hunter. In the first, an arrow meant for the wizard might be deflected by a gust of sudden wind or a desire to bend over to pick up a pebble. Once triggered, the weave of fate unravels.   There are limits to the Whims of Destiny, and any requests beyond it will simply fail. I wish to become a god or I wish Becky would like me fail - the first for being beyond the spell's power, the second for relying on changing someone else, something beyond the spell. Exactly where the spell's power end is unclear, but most go with common sense.   The spell's quiet workings combined with its significant sacrificial component mean it is somewhat rarely used, especially by mages tend to expect and desire the immediate result you get by tossing a fireball.

Tome of Returning

The Tome of Magic After The End has been enchanted with a powerful version of the Whims of Destiny spell, causing it to uneeringly return to its mistress whenever lost or stolen.   Such uses are not uncommon for the spell, but rarely work on magic items unless they have been created by the same mage.

In The World

Whims of Fate is a spell used for convenience or those frustrated by circumstance. The most effective use of the spell nudge things into such a position so that the mage can act - opportunity meeting luck, so to speak. It is a key distinction of the spell, and mages who sit back and do nothing never see the full benefit of the spell.   Its effect can also be unpredictable. A mage who wishes for wealth might stumble on a coin in the street, or a dragon's hoard... With the dragon still on it. Without action, destiny remains idle.

I like this spell, because of the interesting ways it could be used. It's good that it won't effect the will of other people though.

That is so fun! I love the idea of such a subtle, but still, important spell. I have immediately thought of a wizard who specializes in this spell/this spell is their signature spell :)   I would love to know more about what "an object of fate" and/or the "seven manifestations of Astral Magic" are. It's difficult to know how rare or difficult to get these items are at the moment.

Thank you! :D   And components/reagents is on my to-do list! They are essentialy objects of magical fuel... But there'll be more fun details. Coming soon to an Ithekshem near you!
