Sever Fate's Threads Spell in Ithekshem | World Anvil

Sever Fate's Threads

Fate's puppet no more.
Sever Fate's Threads is an Astral spell of moderate power that removes any fate or destiny imposed on a person, object, item, or event. Fate's reach is long but subtle, no longer enforced by gods and their divine games. Instead, it is now in the domain of mortals, who can inflict or bestow Fate on allies or victims alike... But without the divine support Fate once enjoyed, it is equally within reach of mortal wizards to sever its threads and deny its pull.

Effect

Sever Fate's Threads is a direct spell that puts its force against whatever power is enforcing the Fate that the wizard wishes to dissolve. The more power has been put into the Fate effect, the more power is required from to sever it. Sever Fate's Thread is at an advantage, as weaving a long-term and far-reaching Fate is a complicated and delicate task, destroying it is far more simple. As such, the spell usually doesn't even require any Astral reagents to power it, but when put against destinies of exceptional power, some mages use them to brute force their way through.
People regularly exposed to Fate being dnied them sometimes become Fateless, immune from Fate's whims.

In the World

Since the End of All Things, Fate has been set free from the exclusive grasp of gods. Entire fields of magic have been discovered and lost in ways to manipulate, enforce, or rob the power of destiny from either people, places or objects. As with any new weapon, an armor is made to counter it, with Sever's Fate's Thread being an early and relatively crude development. Often credited with being the first to cast the spell, and tired of cunning opponents using battlefield-wide blessings to give their troops an advantage, Fiona the Fateless learned to sever fate's blessing. She's gone on to make it somewhat of a claim to fame, continuing to develop more elaborate (and often cruel) counters to those who'd bend fate to their advantage.   Examples of a Fate-warping spell includes:

For some reason I'm just picturing a wizard figuring out what their destiny is, being like 'nyeeeeeeh', and then casting this spell.

I am intrigued at the idea of severing fate, if fate is indeed what brought into this journey. How interesting that destinies can be weaved and then destroyed by mortals with a little knowledge of the craft. - Nemo, World Traveler
